4-person Chodang Myeongpum table repeat visit: Jeong Eunsuk Chodang

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a Korean restaurant in Chodang-dong, Gangneung, run by a Master Chef of Korea. On a repeat visit, the writer ordered the Chodang Myeongpum table for 4, a full spread of sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew), bossam samhap (boiled pork with tofu and kimchi), and seasoned grilled kodari (dried pollock) with side dishes. It's a set built for families who want to share several dishes rather than just one bowl of sundubu.

Rainy-day fog view of Ulsanbawi at Sokcho mountain café Cafe Neorae

Cafe Neorae is a mountain-view café near Seoraksan in Sokcho, Gangwon, with Ulsanbawi rock framed by its windows. On a day when rain and fog left Ulsanbawi hazy, the writer settled in with an Americano, a Sua Da Einspänner (Vietnamese condensed milk coffee with cream) and a chocolate croissant across the café's second, third and rooftop floors. Cafe Neorae is worth a slow rainy-day stop, and worth a return visit on a clear day when Ulsanbawi shows its full scale.

Gangneung makguksu restaurant: two bowls split at lunch, Gossi's

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is a makguksu (cold buckwheat noodle) and sundubu kalguksu restaurant on floors 1 to 3, right in front of Gangmun Beach in Gangneung. On a weekday lunch visit with a friend, there was no wait at all, and the two of them shared one bowl of kelp-and-soy-based water makguksu and one bowl of makguksu dressed in master-made perilla oil. The floor-to-ceiling ocean view and quick service stood out at Gossi's, and the only regret was not adding an order of boiled pork (suyuk).

Sokcho makguksu restaurant, dongchimi sipped on the side: Topgol

Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant specialising in deulmemak, perilla oil buckwheat noodles (makguksu), tucked between the public parking lots at Sokcho Beach. The order was deulmemak at 13,000 won, pollack sashimi buckwheat noodles at 13,000 won and a potato pancake at 17,000 won: the deulmemak was mixed with extra perilla oil instead of the dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth, with the dongchimi drunk separately, while the pollack sashimi noodles got a spoon of seasoning sauce halfway through for extra savoury depth. If you want to keep that nutty perilla flavour intact, sip the dongchimi on the side at Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch.

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a Chodang sundubu (soft tofu stew) restaurant in Chodang-dong, Gangneung, near the Heo Gyun and Heo Nanseolheon Memorial Park. Visiting with a young baby, the writer ordered the Chodang Myeongpum table (sundubu hot pot + tofu samhap + seasoned braised pollock), available for 2 or more people, with the white sundubu, set aside the baby's portion first, and then stirred in the separately served seasoning sauce for the adults. No separate kids' dish was needed at Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu — the whole family ate the same meal together.
