Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Cheonma Art Center main hall at Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. Adults order a solo-brazier grilled jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) set for 12,900 won or a baby octopus set for 16,900 won, while the 4,900 won Little Explorer bulgogi set for kids comes with juice, and the family added juicy pan-fried dumplings alongside the robot serving and self-bar the child loved. Two 15-piece walnut pastry gift boxes in Gyeongju: Buja Hodu

Buja Hodu is a low-sugar walnut pastry takeout shop on a Poseok-ro backstreet off Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju. Shopping for a Gyeongju souvenir for their parents, the writer bought one box of 15 original and one box of 15 mix at Buja Hodu, tasting the red bean, pea cream cheese and matcha fillings and finding a whole walnut rather than chopped pieces in each pastry. The sweetness stays gentle and the gift box packaging is tidy, so Buja Hodu is an easy souvenir to carry home from a Gyeongju trip.

Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil Korean restaurant to share three dishes: Goyu

Goyu is a Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. Three friends shared three dishes at Goyu — cold jeyuk (chilled boiled pork, served that day with chamnamul instead of garlic scapes), yukhoe bibim buckwheat noodles with beef tartare, and crispy bulgogi — and the mild, tangy and sweet flavours were different enough that picking between bites was half the fun. Goyu is best visited in a group so you can order several dishes and share.

Storing and air-frying pies from Gyeongju Tokyo Pie, a Gyeongju bakery

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a takeout-only bakery on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, where a Japanese pâtissier bakes whole-apple pies. I bought the 3-flavor premium set of 6 for 27,000 won and reheated one the next morning in an air fryer at 180°C for 5 minutes, and it tasted almost the same as freshly bought. Rather than eating the pies at room temperature, give them that 5-minute reheat.

Shrimp fried rice for non-raw-fish eaters at Ppwang Mulhoe, Pohang

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant in Pohang's Yeongildae Beach mulhoe district with a dedicated indoor dog-friendly room. The writer ordered flounder mulhoe, hoe-deopbap (raw fish rice bowl), and shrimp fried rice for the one member of the group who doesn't eat raw fish, plus tteokbokki and yonggari chicken from the self bar. It's a solid pick for anyone who wants to eat mulhoe indoors with a dog, rain or shine.

Gyeongju Korean restaurant for beef tartare rice bowl: Dongyang

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant tucked in a hanok down a side alley of Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju. Craving something spicy, the writer ordered the medium Sumi dakbokkeumtang (spicy chicken stew) and a hanwoo (Korean beef) yukhoe (tartare) rice bowl, and loved the rich broth and boneless chicken that meant no picking bones. A solid, filling stop for a break from sightseeing on Hwangridan-gil.

Egg tart and fruit mochi open-run in Gyeongju's Hwangnidang-gil

Tareudang is a takeout-only dessert shop on the Meister High School lane off Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. The writer lined up at the 11am opening, bought peach, chocolate, and mango yogurt mochi plus an egg tart, then ate them in the shade near Daereungwon and back at the guesthouse. Mango yogurt mochi was the favorite, and the thin, chewy mochi skin and layered pastry tart shell stood out.

Gyeongju walnut pastry shop: 10-piece instant pack or 15-piece box

Buja Hodu is a dessert shop on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju selling walnut pastries and drinks. Buja Hodu's walnut pastries were bought as a gift for the writer's parents, tasting both the 10-piece instant pack for 11,000 won and the 15-piece gift box for 17,000 won, and pea cream cheese was the best of the four flavors. Buja Hodu is an easy pick for a Gyeongju souvenir or a holiday gift.

Pohang mulhoe restaurant with tteokbokki-dipped fried squid: Ppwang

Ppwang Mulhoe is a squid mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant in the Seolmeori mulhoe district at the end of Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. On a hot day at lunch, the half-and-half mulhoe with squid and flounder cost 20,000 won and the fried squid 15,000 won, and the fried squid went into tteokbokki sauce from the self-service side dish bar, followed by a complimentary grilled flounder. Chewy squid and a well-stocked self bar made Ppwang Mulhoe a filling one-dish meal.

Gyeongju Korean restaurant hanok room with mom: Dongyang Baekban

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in a small hanok on Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, known for chicken stew and dakbokkeumtang. After 20,000 steps around Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae, a mother and daughter warmed up in a room seat with the eunyi mushroom nurungji chicken stew (₩38,000) and rice, loaded with boneless chicken, mushrooms, ginseng and black sesame — so filling that half the rice went uneaten. If you're doing Gyeongju on foot or bringing your parents along and need a restorative meal, the eunyi mushroom nurungji chicken stew at Dongyang Baekban is the answer.

Late-visit fruit mochi ranking at Tareudang, Gyeongju: kiwi vs

Tareudang is a takeout fruit mochi and fruit sando dessert shop tucked in the alleys of Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju. Visiting late meant no line, but only three flavors were left — pineapple, mango, and gold kiwi — and among these kiwi came out on top, with pineapple and mango tying for second. The takeaway: go early if you want a specific flavor.
