I went to Goyu, a modern Korean dining spot that adds a contemporary touch to traditional Korean food. It's right on the main street of Hwangnidan-gil, so it's easy to get to, and the food quality was satisfying enough that I really wanted to share it.
How to find Goyu on Hwangnidan-gil, and where to park

Goyu is located on the main street of Hwangnidan-gil, about a 5-minute walk from Daereungwon Tomb Complex and the heart of the Hwangnidan-gil shopping area. It's also just a 2-minute walk from Hwangnam Market, so it fits naturally into a Gyeongju travel route. Searching "Goyu" or "49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si" in navigation apps gets you there easily, but parking is tricky, so if you're driving, use a nearby public parking lot — either the Hwangnam Living Culture Center public parking lot or the Hwangnidan-gil public parking lot.
Inside Goyu: hanok exterior, modern dining room

Goyu has an exterior that keeps the feel of a traditional hanok, while the interior is clean and modern. The outdoor space was also nicely arranged, great for photos, and the restroom inside was clean and convenient. When I visited, there were plenty of foreign customers as well as Korean ones, which made it clear this place has become known as a must-visit restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil. Both the owner and staff were friendly the whole time, which made the meal even more pleasant.
Ordering at the Goyu kiosk

The signature dishes are perilla oil buckwheat noodles, hanwoo beef tartare perilla oil bibim noodles, grilled mackerel gondre hot pot rice, whole pork belly kimchi jjim, and hanwoo yukjeon (beef pancake). Everything looked delicious, so after some deliberation I ordered 3 dishes plus a dessert that looked intriguing. Ordering was easy from the kiosk right at the table, and I was pleasantly surprised to find hair ties thoughtfully placed on the table.

The banchan that starts the meal at Goyu

The kimchi that came as a side had a satisfying crunch, and the beef radish soup was packed generously with meat too.

Cold pork with doenjang and kale ssambap, 18,000 won
I ordered the cold pork with doenjang (soybean paste) kale ssambap (lettuce wrap) first — the doenjang was really tasty, and it even had carrot and egg packed inside like gimbap, making it a hearty dish. You could really feel the care Goyu put into this one.

Hanwoo beef tartare bibim buckwheat noodles, 18,000 won
The combination of hanwoo beef tartare and bibim buckwheat noodles was also really satisfying. The nuttiness of the beef tartare, the crunch of the pear, and the tangy-spicy sauce on the buckwheat noodles came together fantastically. I'd say this is a must-try dish at Goyu.

Sweet and spicy eggplant gangjeong, 9,000 won
I couldn't skip the eggplant gangjeong (sweet and spicy crispy eggplant) side dish either — crispy fried eggplant coated in a sweet and spicy sauce felt just like eating seasoned fried chicken. The eggplant itself was soft and moist, while the batter and sauce added a savory depth — totally crispy-outside, tender-inside, and I kept going back for more.

Matcha pistachio dried persimmon for dessert, 5,000 won
The last thing I ordered, matcha pistachio dried persimmon, came in a sandwich-like form — I'd seen this style in photos before but had never tried it myself. The rich matcha flavor and sweet dried persimmon went together surprisingly well, and it was so good it was almost shocking. It made me want to search for where else I could buy it 😍. If you've got room after your meal at Goyu, I highly recommend saving space for this dessert.

Final verdict on Goyu in Gyeongju
The menu impressed me with how it combined the deep flavors of traditional Korean food with a modern sensibility, and the meal overall was satisfying. Being right in the heart of Hwangnidan-gil made it easy to access, and with such friendly service, this is somewhere I'd want to return to on my next trip to Gyeongju.
