Pohang mulhoe restaurant for Sunday 11am with parents: Ppwang Mulhoe

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant in the pink building of the Seolmeori Mulhoe District, right beside Yeongildae Beach in Pohang. Arriving at 11am on a Sunday with their parents, the writer ordered the 3-combo hoedeopbap (raw fish over rice), 3-combo mulhoe, half-and-half mulhoe and fried squid, then filled up on tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) and side dishes from the self bar. For anyone who wants chamgajami (flounder) and squid sashimi in the same bowl, the combo menus at Ppwang Mulhoe are the answer.

Gyeongju Korean restaurant with beef sashimi mulhoe and chicken stew

Dongyang Baekban is a hanok-style Korean restaurant in an alley at the far end of Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju. This visit ordered the regular hanwoo mulhoe (raw beef and vegetable cold soup) and a medium-size Eunibeoseot Heuk-nurungji chicken stew, pairing cool raw beef soup with a bone-free chicken hot pot spicy enough to sweat out summer but mild enough for babies at the next table over. There's no parking lot, but between the hanok rooms and boneless chicken, it's an easy pick for a date or a family meal with a little one.

Mango brûlée tart and fruit mochi at a food-truck-style café in

Tareudang is a fruit mochi and tart takeout spot tucked in a Hwangnam-dong alley on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju. Its showcase, styled like a cute little food truck, displays a mango brûlée tart alongside fresh mango, peach, and gold kiwi mochi, and splitting one open revealed thin, chewy rice cake bursting with juice instead of feeling heavy. It's a great stop for a sugar boost while wandering Hwangnidang-gil or for picking up a gift box.

Pohang mulhoe restaurant with an abalone add-on: Ppwang Mulhoe

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (Korean cold raw fish soup) restaurant on the coastal road facing Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. After a soak at Yangdeok Gwangcheonsu hot springs, the writer arrived on a weekday close to last order and ordered squid mulhoe at 20,000 won, flounder mulhoe at 20,000 won and abalone at 10,000 won, adding squid soup, cheongyang chili and wasabi from the unlimited self bar. The squid was tender and the flounder melted in the mouth, making Ppwang Mulhoe a good place to taste two kinds of mulhoe side by side.

Gyeongju Korean restaurant Monday lunch wait, hanok charm: Dongyang

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, set inside a renovated old house. Arriving just after opening on a Monday lunch during a day trip still meant a 30-minute wait, followed by sumi dakbokkeumtang (potato chicken stew), gyeranbap (egg rice), yukhoebap (beef tartare rice) and mini perilla oil-fried beef. With a sunny picture window and a courtyard to explore, it made for a great meal on a Gyeongju day trip.

Hanji-wrapped fruit mochi for a couple's trip in Gyeongju: Tareudang

Tareudang is a giant fruit mochi specialty shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. Visiting with her boyfriend during a Gyeongju trip, the writer took mango yogurt, gold kiwi, and pineapple mochi to go and ate them back at the guesthouse, finding whole fruit inside each one and a thin, chewy rice cake skin. The hanji (traditional Korean paper) wrapping made the package feel gift-worthy, and gold kiwi came out on top of the three.

Pohang mulhoe restaurant with tablet ordering: Ppwang Mulhoe

Ppwang Mulhoe is an ocean-view mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant on Haean-ro in the Yeongildae area of Pohang. Every table has a tablet, and the order screen even has a checkbox for cucumber in or out, so two double portions of squid mulhoe went in that way, with side dishes taken from a self bar that refills without limit from start to finish. The icy broth stretched far enough for somyeon noodles and a bowl of rice at the end — a genuinely filling meal for two.

Gyeongju Korean restaurant weekday opening rush for 3, set for 3

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant tucked in a hanok house down an inner alley of Hwangridan-gil, Gyeongju. Visiting right at weekday opening, three of us shared the Sumi dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) set with caviar-topped rice, pollack roe rice, yukjeon (pan-fried beef), and sikhye (sweet rice punch), and still couldn't finish it. A good pick for travelers who want to try several Korean dishes in small portions at once.

Peach, mango, and chocolate mochi shared by five in Gyeongju

Tareudang is a takeout-only fruit mochi and fruit sando (fruit sandwich mochi) dessert shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju. Peach yogurt, mango yogurt, and fresh chocolate mochi were bought to go and cut with a knife at home to share among five family members, each showing a distinct texture and cross-section, from the crisp bite of the peach to the big chunks of mango to the sweetness of the chocolate. One mochi is generous enough for two people to split.

Pohang mulhoe restaurant at 10:15am, before the 11am queue: Ppwang

Ppwang Mulhoe is a seafood restaurant right in front of Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, Gyeongbuk, serving mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) with a free self bar. Arriving at 10:15am, before the 10:30 opening, meant no wait, while the line outside started at 11am; the squid and flounder half-and-half mulhoe came with an especially generous, fresh portion of raw fish, backed by fried squid and squid soup. For a weekend visit to Ppwang Mulhoe, getting there before opening was the smartest move.

Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant with kids: cheese tteokgalbi

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, set inside a remodelled old house. On a spur-of-the-moment stop on the last day of a family trip, the writer sat in a detached annex-like seat with a kid's chair and ordered Korean beef tripe hotpot, egg rice, cheese tteokgalbi for the children and Sipjangsaeng beer. Dongyang Baekban turned out to be a quiet, easy place to eat Korean food out with kids.

Slightly frozen mango and peach yogurt mochi in Gyeongju: Tareudang

Tareudang is a dessert café on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju selling yogurt mochi with whole fruit inside. Buying four flavors — mango, two golden kiwi, and peach — the writer ate the mango right away and slightly froze the rest in a cooler bag, finding the mochi and yogurt cream firmed up nicely for a better texture. The verdict: eat Tareudang's fruit yogurt mochi slightly frozen, not fully frozen.
