Pohang mulhoe restaurant with an abalone add-on: Ppwang Mulhoe

In short

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (Korean cold raw fish soup) restaurant on the coastal road facing Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. After a soak at Yangdeok Gwangcheonsu hot springs, the writer arrived on a weekday close to last order and ordered squid mulhoe at 20,000 won, flounder mulhoe at 20,000 won and abalone at 10,000 won, adding squid soup, cheongyang chili and wasabi from the unlimited self bar. The squid was tender and the flounder melted in the mouth, making Ppwang Mulhoe a good place to taste two kinds of mulhoe side by side.

Where is Ppwang Mulhoe, and is there parking at Yeongildae Beach?

Pohang's mulhoe hotspot 'Ppwang Mulhoe' is located right across from Yeongildae Beach. Since it's right on the shore, it's super easy to spot 🙋🏻‍♀️

Parking was convenient — you can park right in front of the restaurant or along the coastal road.

What Ppwang Mulhoe feels like near last order on a weekday

We visited on a weekday close to closing time, so there were barely any other customers. The interior has a wide open hall layout with plenty of room and lots of tables. The sea is visible right through the windows, so I imagine visiting during the day would let you enjoy your mulhoe with an open sea view 🙌🏻

You order and even pay through the tablet on the table, which was really convenient!

The self bar had all kinds of side dishes and food ready to go, so I thought it'd be a great spot to bring kids too.

Among everything, the squid soup was seriously delicious! The rich squid broth had a spicy, savory kick that kept pulling me back for more, and eating it alongside the mulhoe that came out later was an amazing combo 👍🏻

Not long after ordering, the mulhoe and abalone arrived quickly 🙌🏻

Squid mulhoe, 20,000 won — you can ask for no cucumber

I've had mulhoe with regular raw fish or seafood before, but this was my first time trying squid mulhoe, so I was really looking forward to it 🤤 There's a ton of squid packed in! The texture was tender yet moist, which was very satisfying.

It's loaded with cucumber, pear, carrot, minced garlic, and even seaweed flakes! (If you don't like cucumber, you can ask them to leave it out when ordering.)

There are several ways to enjoy the mulhoe. First, mix the fresh squid with the gochujang sauce and eat it as is ~ the chewy, springy squid, the crunchy sweet vegetables, and the tangy-sweet seasoning all hit together and really woke up my appetite 😋

Next, pour in the icy broth and eat it with rice and noodles for a spicy, refreshing bite — it was absolutely delicious 🦑

Flounder mulhoe, 20,000 won — the fish that melts away

Next up was my partner's flounder mulhoe order — the squid mulhoe was already amazing, right?? But one bite of this and, whoa~~~ flounder mulhoe could be this good!

I had no idea flounder could be this soft. The second it hit my mouth it practically melted 😇 It was soft yet chewy at the same time — so delicious!

How to add cheongyang chili and wasabi to your mulhoe broth

I also tried adding the chili and wasabi from the self bar 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Ah, if you like that spicy, sharp kick, you have to try it this way too. The wasabi meeting the mulhoe broth creates a whole different flavor! I enjoyed it plain as a mixed dish first, then with cheongyang chili and wasabi added, and then with the broth poured in over noodles and rice — a very filling, complete meal!

Abalone, 10,000 won, dipped in sesame oil and salt

The abalone looked fresh, with a firm, chewy, springy texture and a vibrant sea flavor. It's tasty added into the mulhoe, but dipping it fully into the sesame oil sauce was absolutely amazing!!
