Pohang mulhoe restaurant for Sunday 11am with parents: Ppwang Mulhoe

In short

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant in the pink building of the Seolmeori Mulhoe District, right beside Yeongildae Beach in Pohang. Arriving at 11am on a Sunday with their parents, the writer ordered the 3-combo hoedeopbap (raw fish over rice), 3-combo mulhoe, half-and-half mulhoe and fried squid, then filled up on tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) and side dishes from the self bar. For anyone who wants chamgajami (flounder) and squid sashimi in the same bowl, the combo menus at Ppwang Mulhoe are the answer.

Arriving at Ppwang Mulhoe by Yeongildae Beach at 11am on a Sunday

Today I came to Pohang with my parents and checked out Ppwang Mulhoe, known as one of Pohang's best mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) spots. Honestly, before this trip I searched for Pohang mulhoe restaurants a ton, and everyone recommended Ppwang Mulhoe.

Mulhoe style actually varies a lot by region, so if you want to properly experience Pohang-style mulhoe, I highly recommend this place. Pohang is famous for its flounder sashimi, and it's great that you can get chamgajami (olive flounder) mulhoe here.

It was my first time in Pohang so I just trusted the navigation, but the coastal road was so pretty that I felt good the whole drive there. Even on a Sunday morning, most of the tables were already full, which really proved this is a famous spot for a reason. We arrived around 11am and there were only a few tables left. I'd recommend going early.

Where is Ppwang Mulhoe, what are its hours, and where do you park?

Ppwang Mulhoe is located at 203-1 Haean-ro, Buk-gu, Pohang, Gyeongbuk, in the Seolmeori Mulhoe District by Yeongildae Beach. If you search by navigation, it might route you through the back alley behind the restaurant, but apparently that road is blocked off. Make sure to follow the coastal road, and you'll spot the pink building — that's Ppwang Mulhoe!

Since it's a pink building, it stands out from far away so there was no chance of getting lost. The sign is also big, so it wasn't hard to find. There's some parking space right in front of the restaurant, but if it's full during weekends or meal times, using the nearby Yeongildae Beach public parking lot is a good option. Since it's right in front of Yeongildae Beach, it's also nice to take a walk along the sea breeze before or after eating.

Inside Ppwang Mulhoe: private rooms and the sea view

There were a lot of other diners so I couldn't take photos of the other tables, but the interior was spacious and there were even private rooms! It seems great for family gatherings or anyone who needs a bit of privacy. The outdoor tables looked amazing on a nice day too.

The floor-to-ceiling windows were so big that you could catch a glimpse of the sea from your seat. Mulhoe with an ocean view — the best!

We ordered four items: 3-combo hoedeopbap, 3-combo mulhoe, half-and-half mulhoe, and fried squid. I wanted to try chamgajami sashimi and squid sashimi mulhoe all at once, and having the half-and-half or 3-combo mulhoe options made me so happy.

What's on the self bar: tteokgalbi and side dishes

Ppwang Mulhoe runs a self bar, and there were so many side dish options that it was fun picking through them. Besides the tteokgalbi, all the other side dishes tasted carefully made too, so I kept reaching for more with my chopsticks.

I honestly thought I'd burst. The tteokgalbi was really delicious.

Why you should order the fried squid

Definitely order the fried squid! It's incredibly soft and amazing, it melts in your mouth. I heard you can also get fried squid as a service item through review events!

How the mulhoe broth tastes with somyeon noodles or rice mixed in

The mulhoe broth was sweet and tangy without being too intense, so it went well whether you added noodles or mixed it with rice.

With mulhoe, you can add as much somyeon (thin wheat noodles) as you want from the self bar, then mix in rice afterward too. My dad, who loves mulhoe, gave this place his stamp of approval. I personally love that cucumber goes into the mulhoe, but if you don't like it, it seems like you can ask them to leave it out in advance!

The 3-combo hoedeopbap, raw fish over rice

I ordered the hoedeopbap and it was so good. It's sweet and tangy, and the amount of flounder and squid sashimi on it was genuinely generous. I added the sauce a bit sparingly, but it wasn't bland at all — it was just right and really satisfying.

Is Ppwang Mulhoe worth another visit with parents?

My parents said it had been a while since they had such a satisfying meal, which made me proud of the day. If you're planning a trip to Pohang, I'd definitely recommend adding this to your itinerary. I'm 100% willing to visit again the next time I'm in Pohang! Next time I'd like to come try the chamgajami sashimi or steamed squid. If you're visiting Yeongildae in Pohang, I recommend stopping by Ppwang Mulhoe for a bowl of mulhoe!
