Short rib restaurant in Jeju with kkakdugi fried rice: Jeju Udae

Jeju Udae is a straw-fire grilled short rib (udae galbi) restaurant in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju, close to Jeju Airport. As the first meal after landing, a Naver reservation secured a lunch table for straw-fire udae saeng-galbi (raw short ribs) for two and doubanjiang kkakdugi fried rice, and the whole rack was shown at the table before being trimmed in front of us. Jeju Udae was fully booked even at lunch, so booking ahead is essential, but it is worth it for a first meal on the way in from the airport.

Family photo shoot with two kids in Aewol, Jeju: Eoeum-ri Studio

Eoeum-ri Photo Studio is a family snap photo studio in Eoeum-ri, Aewol, on Jeju Island. The family booked the hackberry tree snap through Naver Reservation, shooting outdoors against stone walls and grass with their two kids, then drove about 5 minutes to the studio for prop photos. Rain came and went all day but paused during the shoots, so all four family members came home with photos in two different moods in one session.

Seogwipo seafood restaurant with mackerel sashimi: Tamra Hansang

Tamra Hansang is a braised cutlassfish set restaurant on Taepyeong-ro, near Olle Market in Seogwipo, Jeju. The 75,000 won set for two brought braised cutlassfish, stone pot rice, fried cutlassfish, grilled Jeju black pork and four kinds of sashimi — spot shrimp, mackerel, cutlassfish and amberjack — with lightly seasoned, well-made side dishes. The mackerel sashimi was fresh with no fishy taste, so Tamra Hansang works as a sashimi spot as much as a cutlassfish specialist.

Jeju Jocheon-eup noodle restaurant with free baby noodles: Myeonjumak

Myeonjumak Jeju Main Branch is a black pork gogi guksu (pork noodle soup) restaurant on Beonyeong-ro in Jocheon-eup, Jeju, near Eco Land and the Saryeoni Forest Path. After a morning at Achimmiso Ranch, the writer's family ordered two bowls of Jeju black pork noodle soup and a half portion of dombe pork, and Myeonjumak brought out a free bowl of baby noodles for their child under 36 months, along with a microwave for baby food and kid-sized spoons and forks. It is a filling, low-stress stop for a meal with a small child while crossing eastern Jeju.

Jeju black pork BBQ: aged pork belly vs gabrisal at Don Gueo in Sehwa

Don Gueo is an aged black pork grill restaurant in Sehwa, Jeju, right across from the Hanaro Mart. On a weekday lunch visit the order was the Jeju black pork set for two (₩42,000) plus one serving of aged gabrisal (pork shoulder, ₩21,000), grilled side by side: the ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly) had chewy-crisp skin and rich, nutty fat, while the gabrisal was leaner and mild. Don Gueo also has a one-person set for ₩28,000, so it works for solo travelers on Jeju too.

Jeju typhoon-day media art café and magnets: Nohyeong Supermarket

Nohyeong Supermarket is an indoor media art space on Nohyeong-ro in Jeju City. Visited with friends during a 3-night, 4-day Jeju trip that fell inside a typhoon's path, the entry-plus-drink ticket at Nohyeong Supermarket covered tangerine juice, an iced americano and strawberry jumulleok, followed by a gobeullak token draw and a magnet for 5,000 won at the Nohyeong Japhwajeom gift shop. One of the better things to do in Jeju City when rain and strong wind rule out outdoor sightseeing.

Family black pork dinner with kids' terrace at Jeju Healing Dwaeji

Jeju Healing Dwaeji is an ocean-view black pork restaurant in Jung-mun, Seogwipo, on Jeju Island. We ordered 600g of black pork plus a half-portion extra with healing kimchi jjigae, ate on the terrace as the sunset came down, and tried all four salts, myeoljeot, and the staff's jalapeño-and-olive combo. While the meat was pre-grilled in the kitchen, our kids played at the terrace basketball hoop, making it an easy, relaxed family dinner.

Reservation, extra samgyeopsal & bibim naengmyeon: Nopo Dwaeji Aewol

Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is a Jeju black pork geungogi (butcher-cut pork by the geun, about 600g) restaurant right across from Gwakji Beach. Visiting with a 6pm Naver reservation, the writer ordered the samgyeopsal-and-mokssal geungogi set plus a sashimi-style bibim naengmyeon, then added an extra order of samgyeopsal when the first round wasn't enough. Staff pre-sear the meat and finish it over hot charcoal, and with the melated (fermented anchovy sauce) and breadcrumb salt this good, gopchang-adjacent cuts like galmaegisal and hangjeongsal are next on the list.

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Jeju Iho Tewoo Branch is a wood-fired grilled fish restaurant on the coastal road linking Iho Tewoo Beach and Aljjagi Beach in Jeju. Well-seasoned yet light and clean, not greasy at all, it made for a filling Jeju meal with an ocean view on top.

Marijoa Seogwipo Jungmun Branch is a horse meat restaurant in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju, serving a course that runs from raw tartare and sashimi to sushi, braised ribs, grilled cuts and hot pot. If you're looking for something different from black pork or seafood in Jeju, the Joa Course at Marijoa is a solid pick.

Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch is a hairtail and mackerel stew restaurant right across from Hyeopjae Beach in Jeju. The Jeju manong (garlic) hairtail stew costs 15,000 won per person, with thick, meaty hairtail — about three chunks each — plus a tender small boiled pork dish on the side. The best combo here: rice topped with hairtail, wrapped in seaweed, dipped in the stew broth.
