Gwangju Chinese restaurant with hot stone jjajang: Mayway

In short

Mayway is a newly opened Chinese restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju. I tried its hot stone platter jjajang, a one-person set with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk, plus sweet potato fritters. Verdict: Mayway is a great pick for a hearty meal with several dishes to try.

The dining room was spacious and tidy, making it nice for family meals or group visits, and it also looked like a good lunch spot in Cheomdan. Have a satisfying Chinese meal at lunch, then come back in the evening for draft beer—it is a place I would recommend for drinks, too 🍻

Self-service corner for extra side dishes and rice

There is a self-service corner on one side of the restaurant, so it was nice that we could easily help ourselves to extra side dishes and rice.

Hot stone platter jjajang that stayed warm to the last bite

We ordered from Mayway's menu by QR code, starting with the hot stone platter jjajang! The jjajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce) came piled generously onto a hot stone plate—there was seriously so much of it. It had seafood and plenty of other ingredients, including shrimp, squid, and mushrooms, which went so well with the noodles 🤤

Hot stone platter jjajang loaded with seafood and ingredients

I love jjajangmyeon with thin noodles, and Mayway's hot stone platter jjajang had exactly that. The black bean sauce clung nicely to the noodles, and I also loved that the stone plate kept it warm until the end!! The serving was so generous that it would be great to share between two or three people, and this is absolutely a dish I want to recommend 💯

A one-person set with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk on one plate

One-person set with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk

The one-person set we ordered next came with three dishes on one plate—jjajang, jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), and tangsuyuk—so it is perfect when you want to sample a few things. The jjamppong broth was nicely spicy and delicious, making it great to alternate with the jjajangmyeon 🤤

One-person set with crispy tangsuyuk

The tangsuyuk especially felt a little different from the usual version at Chinese restaurants; personally, I enjoyed how crispy it was, almost like regular fried food • • Since you can enjoy jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk all at once, I would recommend the one-person set for solo dining or whenever you want to try a variety of dishes!

Thin-fried sweet potato fritters and draft beer
Sweet potato fritters served as a drinking snack

We also added sweet potato fritters. They were thinly fried, so they were easy to snack on like sweet potato chips 🍠 Paired with the Chinese dishes and a cold draft beer, they would be just right as a drinking snack on an evening visit.

Ice cream dessert served after the meal

Ice cream was also provided as a final dessert, which made for a clean finish. From the hot stone platter jjajang to the one-person set and sweet potato fritters, we ate until we were really full, and that cool ice cream at the end made it feel like such a satisfying meal 😙

My overall take on Mayway in Gwangju's Cheomdan area

Generous Chinese dishes eaten at Mayway

Mayway in Cheomdan is a newly opened Chinese restaurant with a spacious, clean dining room and generous portions, so we left feeling very satisfied 😋 The hot stone platter jjajang was my personal top recommendation because it was packed with ingredients, and the one-person set lets you enjoy jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk together, so it also seems like a good spot for a solo meal in Cheomdan. I recommend Mayway for a Cheomdan lunch or a great Chinese restaurant meal!
