Gwangju jokbal restaurant for baseball nights: Kkankkan Jjokbal

In short

Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch is a jokbal restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju. I had charcoal-grilled jokbal for 42,000 won with soft tofu stew, steamed egg, a mini spicy bossam review-event dish, ice cream, and coffee. Verdict: a satisfying spot for jokbal, soju, and a baseball game.

Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch signature jokbal

🔥 Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch, a great jokbal spot in Gwangju's Suwan district—there are days when you just crave a plate of jokbal (braised pig's trotters) with a shot of soju, right? 🍖🍶 This time, I visited Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch in Suwan district. The name itself suggests they are particular about things, and as I walked in, one phrase immediately caught my eye.

Jokbal slogan inside the restaurant

We will not make jokbal that our own children cannot eat.

It was an impressive slogan from the start—it conveyed confidence in the food and a real sense of principle. 👍✨

A great atmosphere for watching baseball with jokbal

What especially stood out was the huge screen! 📺⚾ Visit on a game day during baseball season, and it would be perfect to tear into jokbal while watching a game.

It looked great for a casual drink with friends, or for a larger group to have jokbal and drinks while watching the game. 🍺🔥

Glossy charcoal-grilled jokbal

Charcoal-grilled jokbal with a subtle charcoal aroma

The dish I ordered was Kkankkan Jjokbal's signature 🔥 charcoal-grilled jokbal, ₩42,000. I love jokbal itself, but the key here is that it is infused with a charcoal aroma, unlike regular jokbal. The moment it arrived, the glossy appearance alone looked absolutely right. 🤤✨

Before the jokbal came out, the side dishes began arriving one by one, and the spread was quite neat. 🥢

Side dishes served before the jokbal

Soft tofu stew and steamed egg as side dishes

What I especially liked was the soft tofu stew! 🔥

Soft tofu stew with an egg

A bubbling bowl of soft tofu stew with an egg cracked right in! 🥚 Starting with a spoonful of hot broth made it a great way to properly begin with a drink. 🍶

Steamed egg and jokbal side dishes

With soft steamed egg and side dishes that pair well with jokbal also on the table, it never felt sparse while waiting for the main dish. 😋👍

A piece of charcoal-grilled jokbal

Finally, a piece of charcoal-grilled jokbal! 🍖 The skin had that delightfully chewy texture, while the meat was not dry, so they worked wonderfully together. Above all, the subtle charcoal aroma that came through with every bite was so appealing. 🔥

Jokbal with tender meat

The aroma was not so strong that it covered the natural flavor of the jokbal; it blended naturally with the savory meat as I chewed, so I kept reaching for more. 😋 It was delicious on its own, but you cannot skip the wraps. 🌿

Jokbal eaten with perilla leaf
Jokbal served in a lettuce wrap

I put a piece of jokbal on a fragrant perilla leaf and made a big wrap, then tried one with lettuce, jokbal, and side dishes! 🥬🍖 It was the same jokbal, but each wrap tasted a little different depending on how I made it, which made trying all the accompaniments fun.

A piece of jokbal, then a shot of soju. 🍖➡️🍶 A spoonful of hot soft tofu stew, then another piece of jokbal. This combination is impossible to resist. 😂🔥

Charcoal-grilled jokbal paired with soju

The added charcoal aroma made it pair especially well with drinks compared with regular jokbal. With chewy skin, tender meat, and that subtle charcoal scent, it was the kind of flavor that naturally made me think of soju. 🍶✨

Mini spicy bossam in the receipt review event

Receipt review event notice

There was also a receipt review event that would be a shame to miss. 🎁✨ The dish I received through the event was mini spicy bossam (boiled pork wraps)! 🌶️🍖

Lightly spicy mini bossam

After a bite, it was not intensely spicy enough to make my mouth tingle. It was lightly spicy and savory instead, so it was easy to enjoy without feeling overwhelmed. 😋🔥

Having the spicy bossam between bites of charcoal-grilled jokbal gave the meal a change of pace, and the pairing was better than I expected. 👍

Finishing with ice cream and coffee

After filling up on jokbal, it was time for something sweet to finish! 😆 Fun fact: they had something called “Kkanjokhu Starbucks” ready here. ☕✨

Ice cream and bean coffee dessert

With cool, sweet ice cream 🍦 and Starbucks bean coffee ☕ available, it was a nice, tidy way to finish without needing to go elsewhere for dessert after the meal.

Ice cream and coffee after the meal

From charcoal-scented jokbal to lightly spicy mini bossam, then ice cream and coffee at the end! 🍖🌶️🍦☕ Being able to finish the whole meal, dessert included, in one place was another thing I liked about Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch. 😊👍

Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch had a wonderfully chewy texture and an appealing, subtly infused charcoal aroma. 🍖🔥 It went beautifully in perilla-leaf or lettuce wraps, and with soft tofu stew and steamed egg alongside, it made for a generous full spread. 😊 The mini spicy bossam from the receipt review event was lightly spicy and savory too, making it a good in-between bite. 🌶️👍 Afterward, ice cream and Starbucks bean coffee meant I could finish sweetly and neatly without looking for a separate café. 🍦☕ It is a place I would think of again when I want jokbal and a shot of soju in Suwan district. 🍶✨
