Gwangju Chinese restaurant for jjajang and scallion kimchi: Mayway

In short

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju. I ordered the solo set, seafood scorched-rice soup, and stone jjajang, with the sizzling jjajang and scallion kimchi as the standout pairing. Verdict: I’d happily return whenever I crave warm stone jjajang and scallion kimchi.

Mayway in Cheomdan: Location and Visitor Information

I was craving delicious jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), so after searching around, this is where I ended up! The visuals alone were amazing, so I was really excited to taste it.

Mayway is open daily from 11:00 to 22:00, with a break from 15:00 to 17:00 and last orders at 21:30. High chairs and children’s tableware were available. There is no separate parking lot, but I was told that parking enforcement is not in effect in front of the restaurant from 11:00 to 14:00 during lunch, or you can park on the road behind the restaurant :)

It is on a main road, and the black lettering with red accents on the sign really caught my eye.

The interior was upscale and very neat, too. I arrived right after opening, when about two parties were eating, but before long, customers started pouring in. It really does seem to be a great Chinese restaurant in Cheomdan ♥

Self-Serve Bar and Ordering

The self-serve bar had danmuji (yellow pickled radish), scallion kimchi, sweet corn, onions, and more. I also loved that bowls of rice were free ✨

Sweet Potato Fritters and Self-Serve Sides

As soon as you order, these sweet potato fritters come out! The sweet potatoes were sliced super thin and fried, and they were warm and seriously delicious.

The sweet corn and scallion kimchi were sooo good, haha. The kimchi was nicely fermented and the seasoning was delicious, so I had a feeling it would go incredibly well with jjajangmyeon.

A Solo Set with Jjajang, Jjamppong, and Tangsuyuk

First up was the solo set. It comes with small portions of jjajangmyeon, jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), and tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour fried pork), and the biggest plus is getting to taste all three. The jjamppong had just the right level of heat, exactly my style.

The tangsuyuk was freshly fried, too—crispy outside and tender, soft meat inside 😆 Nothing quite compares to eating tangsuyuk at the restaurant.

Seafood Scorched-Rice Soup That Stays Hot to the Last Bite

The second dish, seafood scorched-rice soup, was poured straight into a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot), and it was honestly so, so delicious!!

Because the earthenware pot stayed hot, I could enjoy the food warm until the very end! It is really hot, so be careful, haha.

Stone Jjajang Topped with Scallion Kimchi

This is Mayway’s signature stone jjajang!! They pour the jjajangmyeon straight onto a fire-heated stone plate, so I loved being able to eat it warm and sizzling.

There was lots of sauce, so it felt like eating it gently simmered in the sauce. The noodles were soaked through with flavor—seriously, insanely good!!! ♥️♥️

Stone jjajang noodles with plenty of sauce

Putting scallion kimchi on those glossy jjajang noodles... 🤦🏻♀️ You really have to try it to know! Can’t everyone imagine that flavor? The flavors you already know are the most dangerous, right? ㅠㅠ The scallion kimchi, more than the pickled radish, was truly the key 😍

After finishing the noodles, I brought over some rice and mixed it in, creating a truly delicious jjajang rice dish. There was quite a lot of sauce, so even with a generous amount of rice, it was just right. The portion was huge. Rice and scallion kimchi were a match made in heaven, too!! It was really delicious.

Ice cream served as dessert after the meal

Afterward, they even gave us this pretty ice cream for dessert. Everything was so delicious and pleasing to look at, too. Mayway was perfect right through dessert, and I don’t think I’ll ever forget the stone jjajang-and-scallion-kimchi combination, haha. I’ll be back again soon ♥
