Gyeongsan Japanese restaurant for sashimi rice bowls: Sonsi Sushi

In short

Sonsi Sushi Yeungnam University Main Branch is a Japanese restaurant near Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. We enjoyed the apple chojang sashimi rice bowl, thick aged sushi, and light shrimp tempura. Verdict: I’d happily come back.

Last weekend was another Yeungnam University date in Gyeongsan~ We went to Sonsi Sushi Yeungnam University Main Branch, a great spot for thick-cut sushi that also has a location in Hayang.

Sonsi Sushi had a varied Japanese menu, from sushi to sashimi rice bowls and futomaki (large sushi rolls). Check the listing for the location and menu. ++ The set menus are great value too, so recommended!

You can join the waitlist through Catchtable, and there was a bench beside it for waiting, plus a thoughtfully placed umbrella!

What are the seats like inside?

Inside, the clean wood-toned interior was not huge, but there was a good range of two-person tables, four-person tables, and solo-dining seats.

Everything we tried, from sashimi rice bowl to futomaki

White fish and salmon sashimi rice bowl

First up was the sashimi rice bowl. It came with a mix of white fish and salmon, along with generous vegetables and shredded egg! Sesame oil, chojang (sweet-tangy red chili dipping sauce), aged kimchi, and a light soup were served alongside it.

With the nutty aroma of sesame oil, plus the house-made apple chojang that was sweet and nicely tangy, this sashimi rice bowl became my partner’s absolute favorite menu item.

Sonsi Sushi premium aged sushi

Next was Sonsi Sushi’s 12-piece premium aged sushi set near Yeungnam University. This signature selection used three aging methods—kombujime, marinated aging, and flame-smoked aging—and the presentation was good~

12-piece sushi topped with thick slices of fish

The thick slices of fish on top were so satisfying. It was a hearty selection with salmon, tuna, soy-marinated shrimp, raw shrimp, eel, egg, flounder, and even the fin cut. Everything was nutty and clean-tasting with not even a hint of fishiness, so we enjoyed it a lot.

The udon noodles stayed pleasantly chewy rather than going soft, and the broth was rich too.

And then, four pieces of shrimp tempura. Shrimp tempura is not normally my first pick among fried foods, but Sonsi Sushi’s was not greasy, had a lovely nutty flavor, and went perfectly with the sauce—an essential order for me.

The final dish was futomaki. There was barely any rice in it, so it was easy to enjoy alongside the other rice dishes without feeling too full! With bigeye tuna and aged salmon inside, it was a combination that could not possibly taste bad, and we polished it off in no time haha.

Beside the register were thoughtful little touches too—wireless chargers, floss, candies, hair ties, mouthwash, and more..! I’d come back.
