Gondeure set menu with parents in Gwangmyeong: Maehwa Gondeurebap
In short
Maehwa Gondeurebap Gwangmyeong Bamil Village Branch is a gondeure (dried thistle) set-menu Korean restaurant at the foot of a hill in Bamil-ro, Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi. Visiting with parents, the writer shared the Maehwa Signature Gondeure Premium Set and the Fire-grilled Bulchuckumi Premium Set, and found the side dishes, cheonggukjang, gondeure hotpot rice and closing sungnyung all generous. With a wide parking lot and a second-floor café, it made a satisfying family dining spot.

Today I'm writing up a review of Maehwa Gondeurebap Gwangmyeong Bamil Village Branch, a great pick if you're looking for Korean restaurant food in Hanan-dong, Gwangmyeong.

I was trying to figure out where to take my parents for a meal, and this place really delivered — the food was neat and well put together across the board, and the portions were seriously generous. What I especially liked was that everything from the restaurant to the second-floor café was in one spot, which made it a solid choice for a family outing.
What are the exterior and parking lot like?

Maehwa Gondeurebap Gwangmyeong Bamil Village Branch sits at the foot of a hill, so the surroundings felt quiet and pleasant. It has a bit of a getaway-from-downtown feel, the air is nicer, and it suited a relaxed meal with my parents really well.

What I liked most of all was the wide parking lot. Parking quietly matters a lot when you're moving around with your parents, and having plenty of space made it easy to just drive over.
Spacious and comfortable inside

The interior is quite large too, so the atmosphere was comfortable for a family meal.

The tables weren't cramped either, which I think makes this a great fit for anyone looking for a Korean restaurant in Bamil Village to take their parents to.

What the three of us ordered

There were three of us, so we ordered one Maehwa Signature Gondeure Premium Set and two Fire-grilled Gondeure Bulchuckumi Premium Sets. We picked different dishes so we could share, and once the food started coming out it was way more generous than I'd expected.
A table filled edge to edge with gondeure set food

There were so many side dishes that the table filled up fast as they were set down one by one. Even for three people the portions were substantial — at first I honestly wondered if we could finish it all.

It wasn't just a lot of side dishes — they were genuinely tasty overall, so it was fun picking through and trying different ones.

The cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) was especially good. It had that proper savory depth and paired really well with the gondeure rice — eaten hot, it fit perfectly into the whole spread.
Gondeure hotpot rice + sungnyung

Freshly made, hot gondeure sotbap (hotpot rice) came out with the meal. It was piled with fragrant gondeure and the rice itself was genuinely delicious.

The gondeure came through with a subtle aroma and the rice itself was light, so it went well with the side dishes and the cheonggukjang. With so many side dishes to pile on, a whole bowl of rice disappeared fast.

After scooping out the sotbap, they poured water into the pot to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea), which we finished with at the end. Even though we were already stuffed from the huge spread, finishing with that felt like a proper close to the meal.
Fire-grilled bulchuckumi

The Premium Gondeure Fire-grilled Bulchuckumi Set comes with chuckumi (webfoot octopus) given a smoky char. You can choose your spice level, and we went with a nicely spicy version.

Eating the spicy bulchuckumi together with the light gondeure rice and all the side dishes was so satisfying we were full in no time.
What I liked
Beyond the food itself, I liked that it checks every box for a comfortable visit with parents. The parking lot is spacious, the set-menu format means you get to try a wide range of dishes, and the portions are generous — all of which made it satisfying as a family meal spot. Being at the foot of a hill also gives it a relaxed atmosphere, so I'd especially recommend it to anyone looking for Korean restaurant food in Hanan-dong, Gwangmyeong.
After the meal, a second-floor café

Something I personally really liked was that they run a café together on the second floor. After finishing the meal, we didn't have to drive off somewhere else to find a café — nice and convenient.

Even without going up to the second-floor café, you can pull a coffee from the machine at the entrance and drink it on the terrace. Rather than parting ways right after a heavy meal, we got to sit over coffee and keep talking, which made the day with my parents even better.
What I found lacking
With three of us ordering three set menus, the amount of food was truly a lot. Between the many side dishes and the main dish plus the gondeure sotbap on top, even as a fairly big eater I got quite full. If you like generous portions that's a clear plus, but if you eat light you might find it more food than expected.
