Hanbok rental in Jeonju: mother-daughter looks at Gwijok Uisangsil

It had been a while since I visited Jeonju Hanok Village with my child, and when I said, “I’ll buy you everything you want to eat~,” she said she absolutely wanted to rent hanbok (traditional Korean dress)! I was happy to have one more chance to take pretty photos of her, but I was also a little worried—would hanbok rental be expensive..?

But what do you know? I casually asked at Gwijok Uisangsil (귀족의상실), where elegant hanbok were displayed so neatly, and heard that for ₩20,000 per person for 2 hours, they rent out the hanbok top and skirt/trousers and make your hair pretty too. We opened the door and went right in.

Of everything we did in Jeonju Hanok Village, this was the most memorable experience, and the photos came out so beautifully that I’m really glad we did it. We wore mother-daughter hanbok with a similar mood, walked around Jeondong Cathedral and Gyeonggijeon, bought tasty snacks, and enjoyed ₩20,000 worth of happiness. Choosing a hanbok rental shop near your hotel and sights

The first reason I chose Gwijok Uisangsil was its location. We stayed at Lahan Hotel Jeonju on this trip, so it was close enough to reach quickly, and we could even take photos at the hotel while wearing hanbok. There are so many hanbok rental shops in Jeonju Hanok Village that it can be hard to choose; the key is picking one close to your hotel, parking lot, or the sights you plan to visit.

After walking around in hanbok for a long time, going all the way back to return it is work in itself. From Gwijok Uisangsil in Jeonju, it was easy to walk to both Gyeonggijeon and Jeondong Cathedral, then return the outfits and head straight back to the hotel, which saved time.

Jeonju Hanok Village hanbok rental prices

The Jeonju Hanok Village hanbok rental prices were what I was most curious about too. Since these are outfits rented at a tourist destination, I expected around ₩50,000, but Gwijok Uisangsil’s basic hanbok were ₩20,000 for 2 hours and only ₩25,000 for a full day. Hair styling is included too! With a Naver Reservation, there is also a benefit that lets you rent for the full day for ₩20,000, so it looked like many people booked ahead before visiting.

Lots of international visitors come here too, so there was a group booking from abroad in the afternoon and a separate English guide. The premium hanbok line costs an additional ₩10,000. Only my child rented premium, while I picked regular hanbok! There were plenty of pretty options in the basic line too, so I was very satisfied.

Tips for choosing pretty mother-daughter hanbok

Since my daughter and I planned to wear hanbok together, rather than choosing totally different outfits based on our individual tastes from the start, I asked the owner for recommendations with photo-friendly combinations in mind. First, I let my daughter choose the hanbok she liked, then I chose a different color in a design or mood similar to the one she selected.

Even though mother and daughter were not wearing identical hanbok, the overall tones and designs were similar, so we looked natural standing together and had a matching-hanbok feel. If you are renting hanbok in Jeonju Hanok Village as a couple or family, try settling on the overall concept first.

You can rent Gyeongseong-era clothing too, and the atmosphere here is totally on another level! I actually want to wear a modern-era dress and channel the mood of Mr. Sunshine, but today we went ahead with the hanbok rental my child wanted.

Hair styling with so many lovely details

The price including hair styling was so low that I thought they might just braid our hair roughly and tie it with a daenggi (traditional ribbon)—but what do you know. They had more hair ornaments than a place that does wedding snapshots!!!

For hair styling, you can choose half-up hair, braids, or an updo, and we chose braids. She was such a quick-handed pro that she finished our hair in under 3 minutes.

Exploring Jeonju Hanok Village in hanbok

After changing into our elegant hanbok, we started walking around Jeonju Hanok Village in earnest. There were lots of photo spots right in front of Gwijok Uisangsil, and the resting area across the street was pretty too, with crape myrtle in bloom. Since autumn is just beginning to turn cool, I think now may be the best time for hanbok rental in Jeonju Hanok Village.

It was the same hanok village as when we came in our usual clothes, but putting on hanbok completely changed the atmosphere. Take photos against tiled roofs, stone walls, and alleys between hanok, and the photos come alive without any special props. My child especially loved it.

Every time I visited Jeonju Hanok Village, I saw lots of travelers walking around in pretty hanbok, but I kept putting off the hanbok experience because I thought it would be expensive. Having tried it myself, I wondered why I hadn’t done it sooner.ㅠ Starting from a manageable ₩20,000 for 2 hours, it was fun choosing hanbok; after having our hair and accessories prettily done, we could explore Jeonju Hanok Village itself as though it were a photo set. It became an unforgettable memory.
