Bukchon perfume workshop birthday date: tonka bean scent at Muhwawon
In short
Muhwawon is a perfume workshop on the 3rd floor of Juwon Building in Bukchon, Seoul, a short walk from Anguk Station. The writer visited for a birthday couple date, listened to a tablet-guided explanation, chose scents built around tonka bean, adjusted the blending ratio three times, and left with a 50ml premium perfume for 49,000 won. The 2pm booking finished around 3:40pm, so plan about an hour and a half for the Muhwawon class.

Today's story is about Muhwawon, a perfume workshop in Bukchon, Seoul that's been getting a lot of buzz lately. I love scents and use a ton of them in daily life — diffusers, perfume, fabric softener, you name it — so I highly recommend Muhwawon for a Bukchon date.

How to find Muhwawon on the 3rd floor of Juwon Building
Muhwawon is on the 3rd floor of Juwon Building, which you'll spot as you walk along. Before your visit, they text you instructions on how to get into the building.

This is the view right as you walk in — rows of seats set up for the class. Isn't it gorgeous?
Maybe because it's in Bukchon, the space clearly has international visitors in mind — there are English classes, and the interior is done in a very traditional Korean style.

All sorts of certificates were on display too.
And on the other side, the raw materials you'd blend yourself were on display. Muhwawon really has the best interior... a workshop can be this stylish and pretty?! It felt less like a workshop and more like visiting an exhibition.

Table setup and group bookings at Muhwawon
This was our seat for the class today. Each spot was neatly set up with a tablet, earphones, a scale, an empty bottle, and a Muhwawon perfume guide. My heart was already racing thinking about what scent I'd make. It had been a while since a workshop date, and the atmosphere made it even more exciting.

There were seats lined up beside me and even more across the way. It looked super convenient for company outings, club gatherings, or groups of foreign visitors. I hear a lot of companies do club activities at workshops like this these days — wonder when our company will get around to it...

From the tablet guide to testing scents
First, a book opens up with an explanation of perfume ratios and ingredients. This part is done individually via tablet, which means English classes are totally doable — there was an English version of the explanation too!

After the explanation, my partner and I smelled every scent on offer to find what we liked. We sniffed coffee beans in between to reset our noses and worked through each one. This part takes a surprisingly long time — Muhwawon just has that many scents to choose from! Personally, the Korean-style scents in the very last row were most my style.

That tonka bean scent there!! I really loved it. We jotted it right down in our scent notebook.

Three rounds of blending to build the tonka bean perfume
Once you've picked all the scents you like, you discuss the blending ratio with the teacher — base, middle, and top notes. The ratio gets adjusted three times total, so don't worry, just try, try again~

We brought over the ingredients from the wall display and started combining them one by one.

Drop by drop with the pipette, the blend comes together quickly — then you smell the sampler and if you like it, the real blending begins.

I liked the ratio from my second round of blending, so I decided to go with that one. The teacher calculated the total amount based on that ratio and brought it over for me!

Then you just measure out each scent by weight with the pipette as written down.

After blending, they pour it into your own empty bottle!

Birthday label and packaging at Muhwawon
After a short wait, the perfumer brings out the finished product. Since I visited to celebrate my birthday, I put my birthday on the label — now every time I spray it, I'll think, ah, my birthday scent~

Oh my, Muhwawon — the packaging is amazing too. Isn't it so pretty? Even though I made it myself, they wrapped it up so it felt like receiving a gift.

How long does the Muhwawon perfume class take?
My finished perfume, at last!! We had a 2pm reservation, and by the time we came out it was past 3:40pm. We spent extra time taking photos and smelling scents at a leisurely pace, but in general, I'd say plan for about an hour and a half.

They also gave us a car diffuser as a gift for leaving a review!

On the other side, people were sitting and doing the experience too — that spot looked like it had an even better atmosphere. A foreign visitor actually came in while we were there. Bukchon and Muhwawon both seem really convenient for international visitors. And one more thing — Muhwawon also has traditional Korean scents on hand. Maybe because I'm Korean myself, but I really loved the Korean scents in that last row.
I was so, so satisfied visiting Muhwawon as a Bukchon date course and a Seoul perfume workshop experience!! I'd highly recommend this workshop for family, friends, or even group gatherings.
