Namyangju date café with camembert cheesecake: Waltz and Dr. Mahn

Last weekend I went for a drive with my fiancé to find a pretty café by the Bukhan River in Namyangju! There are a lot of nice spots in Namyangju, and it turns out the Garden of Morning Calm's water garden was right near the café, while Dumulmeori was about a 15-minute drive away.

So if you're coming on a date nearby, I highly recommend Waltz and Dr. Mahn, a Bukhan River café in Namyangju with a real European vibe!

What is Waltz and Dr. Mahn? A Namyangju café with its own coffee museum

Waltz and Dr. Mahn is a red-brick castle-shaped café and coffee museum standing right on the Bukhan River in Joan-myeon, Namyangju. The moment I walked through the entrance, the building itself grabbed my attention, standing so grandly right in front of the river.

But first, the parking situation.

It's a bit hard to get to by public transport, so most people will come by car, but it looked like there's easily room for around 30 cars, so don't worry about parking!

There's a red mini bus parked out front that matches the exterior perfectly. Next to it is the entrance to the coffee museum, where apparently you can see coffee-related collections, do tastings, and experience the coffee-making process!

The coffee museum is only closed Mondays and Tuesdays, but last entry is 4pm. We visited around 6pm on a Saturday evening, so sadly we missed the museum...

The mood at Waltz and Dr. Mahn: antique rooms, classical and jazz

Waltz and Dr. Mahn apparently holds an authentic classical music concert with coffee every Friday. Even on other days, classical music plays nonstop throughout the café. Close your eyes and you almost feel like you're sitting at an invisible concert.

There's an outdoor terrace too, and the inside is quite spacious, so seating is very generous.

Maybe because the weather's been perfect for being outdoors lately, the terrace seats were completely full!

We took a seat by the window inside, and once you sit down a dedicated staff member comes over with the menu. Such a classy system :-)

With the European-style exterior, the antique interior, and the classical BGM... even someone as scattered as me somehow felt more refined! That's the kind of atmosphere it was.

What we ordered at Waltz and Dr. Mahn and what it cost

When I opened the first page of the menu, the dining course menu caught my eye. There's Royal (₩200,000), Dinner (₩115,000), and Lunch (₩75,000) courses, and my fiancé and I just exchanged a look. Let's make more money and come back to eat a full meal here plus dessert next time.

After reading through the menu for a while, the very professional staff member came back to take our order, and gave a short, kind explanation for every item we chose, so even the ordering process felt like being taken care of!

Vienna coffee, 16,000 won

A combination where the sweet taste of cold whipped cream is followed by hot, bitter coffee rushing in right after. The first sip had a strong cinnamon flavor, but personally, I loved it!

But seriously, how is the coffee cup so antique and pretty... am I a European princess or what?

Coffee Float Volcano, 16,000 won

The menu item my fiancé, who has a kid's palate, picked instantly. Apparently it's an espresso-based coffee with chocolate ice cream, coffee-flavored whipped cream, nuts, and chocolate topping on top. This is a flavor I'd never had before, and even the whipped cream tasted incredibly luxurious! If you're craving a sweet coffee, I recommend this Volcano.

Camembert cheesecake, 9,000 won

Black powder that looks and tastes like black sesame covers the cheesecake, and it comes with a scoop of vanilla-coffee ice cream on the side.

Scoop up a bite of cake with your fork, swipe it through the ice cream, and take a big bite — it's the kind of sweetness that makes you shout, 'oh my god, I could die happy right now!!'

Bukhan River and mountain views from the window seats

Since we were by the window, the beautiful Bukhan River scenery came right into view through the glass.

You could see people waterskiing behind a boat, and with classical music in your ears while zoning out at the river, it was really, truly great.

As the sun went down, the indoor lighting grew richer, and the European mood went absolutely wild.

If the outdoor terrace is full or it's gotten a bit chilly, just take a seat inside by the window and enjoy watching the river and mountains at your leisure! Plus, bonus life-shot photos included 📸

Between the Waltz and Dr. Mahn building and the Bukhan River there's also a straight walking path, so it's great for a stroll to settle your full stomach after eating well.

Is Waltz and Dr. Mahn okay with kids?

Waltz and Dr. Mahn has a kids' zone, and it looks like they give separate seating guidance if you come with children. Families with kids can come without worry!

The café view was so nice it made me not want to go home, but when I finally got up and asked my fiancé for a one-line review on the way out, he said,

This is the best view I've ever seen in my life.

is what he said.

The antique interior, quiet classical and jazz music, the cool wide-open view of the Bukhan River, and unique but delicious coffees... every sense — eyes, nose, mouth, ears — got some healing!

Thanks to this perfect atmosphere, I think this is the best spot in Namyangju for a date with your partner, or for setting the mood on an anniversary.
