Byeollae beef intestine grill without soju: Chodaechang Byeollae
In short
Chodaechang Byeollae Branch is a beef offal grill restaurant newly opened on Byeollae 5-ro 5beon-gil in Namyangju, Gyeonggi. On a weekday evening, booked through Naver, the meal was grilled daechang (beef large intestine, 19,000 won for one serving), grilled hanwoo gopchang (beef small intestine, 21,000 won for two servings) and spicy doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice soup, 7,000 won), all with no alcohol, and staff grilled everything at the table. Soy sauce with daechang and makchang sauce with gopchang were the standout pairings, and Chodaechang Byeollae Branch works just as well as a plain dinner without soju.

Since it had been a while since I met my only friend in the neighborhood, we went to check out Chodaechang Byeollae Branch, a newly opened restaurant in Byeollae. We visited on a weekday close to 7pm after making a Naver reservation!
Beyond the clean interior, having the staff grill everything for us meant we could eat comfortably, and not just the main daechang and gopchang but the side dishes were delicious too! It was more satisfying than I expected, so I wanted to introduce it to anyone looking for a good gopchang restaurant in Byeollae.

True to a newly opened Byeollae restaurant, the exterior was super clean! There's parking for about 4 cars in front of the building. If it's full, you'll need to use a nearby paid lot — worth knowing!
- Byeollae-dong Roadside No.9 public parking lot
- GS The Fresh Byeollae parking lot

At the entrance you could see a simple menu board and info about a review event. What caught my eye was the notice that it's been Blue Ribbon-selected for 3 years straight! Chosen every year from 2024 through this year, 2026, so my expectations for the food went up a little.
What the Chodaechang Byeollae dining room is like

The inside was also very clean overall! With high ceilings and an open layout, the space felt even bigger and more comfortable.
Personally, when I think of a good gopchang restaurant, I usually picture somewhere a bit uncomfortable with an old-school vibe rather than upscale and cozy, but Chodaechang Byeollae had a clean, upscale atmosphere with seats that were easy to eat at, which I liked.
Especially nice was the storage space under the tables for cups, dishware, and tissues — it kept the tabletop clean and made it convenient to grab what you needed right away.

Once we sat down, they set up our dishware and utensils first. The utensils were individually wrapped, which felt hygienic, and it seemed like even these small details were managed carefully. Empty tables were covered with colorful table covers that matched the restaurant's vibe well — a nice little touch of thoughtfulness👍 Baby chairs were also available separately, so families visiting with kids should be able to eat comfortably too.
Side dishes and sauces served at Chodaechang Byeollae

The side dishes included soy sauce and makchang sauce, a lettuce salad-style side, crunchy pickled vegetables, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), and a potato corn salad. Overall there were a lot of crunchy, refreshing sides, which worked well to cut through the richness of the gopchang and daechang!
The water was especially good too. 👀 It didn't taste like doongul레 tea or barley tea, but had a subtly nutty, clean flavor — my friend and I actually said "even the water here is good" haha.

On the wall, everything from origin labeling to wifi and restroom info to sauce and daechang/makchang/teukyang combos was clearly posted, which was helpful to reference while eating. The gim-wasabi (seaweed-wasabi) pairing was one I'd never seen before at any other restaurant, so it felt fresh.
What we ordered: grilled daechang, hanwoo gopchang and doenjang sulbap

A friendly menu board with photos — exactly my style♥️ Menu items and prices were easy to see at a glance. + There was also a galbisal (grilled rib meat) option, good news for anyone in Byeollae craving regular meat too.
The mixed grill set menus were also well put together, but ours included items we don't usually eat, so we ordered à la carte instead! For mains we ordered 2 servings of grilled hanwoo gopchang and 1 serving of grilled daechang, and for sides, after debating between yang bokkeumbap (stir-fried rice with beef tripe) and spicy doenjang sulbap, we went with the doenjang sulbap since we wanted something with broth too.
Normally when I eat gopchang or daechang, it's always felt like a drinking snack first and foremost, but lately drinking makes the next day rough… so this time too, we enjoyed it without alcohol! It had been a while since I ate daechang without soju, so I wondered if the food alone would really be satisfying — turns out I worried for nothing😆

Grilled daechang ₩19,000 / Grilled hanwoo gopchang ₩21,000

Once the gopchang and daechang we ordered arrived, a staff member grilled it all for us. They grilled it to just the right doneness, so we could relax and chat without worrying about it ourselves! Watching the gopchang and daechang sizzle away deliciously… my expectations were already rising from the visuals alone🤤

Best pairings: soy sauce with daechang, makchang sauce with gopchang
Daechang and hanwoo gopchang grilled by an expert hand♥️ The daechang had that distinctive savory, rich flavor come through fully. The outside was browned nicely while the inside stayed soft and savory, so one piece led to the next. The gopchang had a bit more chew than the daechang, with its own deep, savory intensity that gave it a different kind of appeal.
Dipping the daechang in soy sauce and enjoying its rich, savory flavor as-is was already good! Pairing it with the pickled vegetables made it even better♥️ The pickles' crunch and tangy flavor cut through the richness of the daechang, so eating them together kept us going without feeling too heavy.
And here's another combo I discovered — makchang sauce + gopchang! It seemed like makchang sauce was meant for dipping makchang (beef abomasum), but surprisingly it went really well with gopchang too. The chewy gopchang combined with the deep flavor of the makchang sauce made the flavor even richer than eating it plain. I usually prefer daechang and don't eat as much gopchang, but that day, thanks to the makchang sauce, I ended up finishing all of it too. 🥳
Spicy doenjang sulbap, 7,000 won
Spicy doenjang sulbap ₩7,000

The spicy doenjang sulbap we ordered as a side was more delicious than expected! It came loaded with big chunks of tofu and zucchini, so every spoonful brought plenty of hearty ingredients along with it. Unlike regular doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) eaten with rice on the side, this had the rice mixed right in, making it filling and satisfying, and the spicy broth paired really well with the gopchang too.
After eating gopchang or daechang for a while, the richness tends to linger, but the warm, spicy broth with rice cleared the palate each time, so I kept going back for more. I ordered it thinking it was just a light side dish, but it was so good that I scraped up every last bit of broth by the end. 😋

And once we finished eating and mentioned it to the staff, they brought out Excellent ice cream as dessert! Excellent used to be such a rare treat when I was a kid…🥹 After eating daechang, gopchang, and even finishing off the doenjang sulbap, getting Excellent ice cream on top of it all! At this point I almost worried whether they were making any profit at all lol. We ate so well that I really hope they keep running this place in Byeollae for a long, long time!
