Café Royale flambé at a Namyangju café: Waltz and Dr. Mahn

In short

Waltz and Dr. Mahn is a large red-brick café on Bukhangang-ro in Joan-myeon, Namyangju, with a café on the first floor and a coffee museum on the second. This visit brought the Café Royale, where a sugar cube is set alight at the table, plus the signature Honor and Chevalier parfait and Camembert cheesecake, served by a suited waiter who poured the water tableside. Between the antique interiors and the Bukhan River view, Waltz and Dr. Mahn fits an anniversary date or a day out with parents.

My stress had hit its peak lately, so I wanted to escape somewhere crowded and just zone out — and I found a place where I could soak in the relaxed scenery of the Bukhan River while trying some unusual coffee. Today's spot is tucked away in Joan-myeon, Namyangju.

It's called Waltz and Dr. Mahn.

Where is Waltz and Dr. Mahn, and is there parking?

Waltz and Dr. Mahn sits right off Bukhangang-ro, about 5 minutes by car from Water Garden and just over 10 minutes from Dumulmeori. Drive along the riverside and the grand red-brick building comes into view all at once.

There's a spacious dedicated parking lot right in front of the café. With that much room, you really don't need to worry about parking.

Café on the first floor, coffee museum on the second

Starting with the outside, Waltz and Dr. Mahn runs a coffee museum on the second floor while the first floor operates as the café. It happened to be the museum's day off when I visited, so I couldn't look around it this time.

If you're planning to check out the museum too, be sure to look up the closure days beforehand.

You can catch glimpses of these gorgeous vintage-feeling cars from outside — now let's head into the café.

Seen from a distance, the building really looks like a castle. It genuinely feels like stepping into a grand, antique French château.

There are outdoor tables too, so on a nice day you can catch a cool breeze while taking in the Bukhan River view.

Antique interiors and the exhibition space

There's a separate space near the entrance, and the moment you open the door, the grand, classic wood-toned antique interior grabs your attention.

It's a private space that can be booked for events — reserving it for an anniversary meal would be really special.

There's also an art exhibition on the walls featuring emerging artists, which made it feel like being at an actual gallery.

There's a dessert display at the entrance — apparently baked personally by pastry chef Jo Jun-hyeong, one of the early graduates of Tokyo's confectionery school.

There's a display of high-end teacups too — apparently precious pieces collected from various countries. I know absolutely nothing about tableware, but they clearly look expensive.

The coffee brewing station was neat and tidy too, and I got to watch them hand-drip, which felt fascinating.

I felt like I'd been invited to the home of some wealthy European lord.

This lamp is apparently one that was used by the British royal family. Once again, the interior and props here are no joke.

A suited waiter pours your water at the table

As soon as we sat down, a waiter in a crisp suit came over and politely poured our water himself. I was so caught off guard by this unexpected hotel-level service — especially since I'd shown up in a haul-day, scruffy outfit (I felt slightly self-conscious, haha).

There's a certain power a space like this holds — heavy and dignified — so it seems like it'd be great not just for an anniversary date but also as a gathering spot for parents or elders.

The story of Waltz and Dr. Mahn, from the brochure

I read through the brochure carefully — Dr. Park Jong-man, who once ran an interior design company, started this place in 1996 with a coffee bean shop near Hongdae, and has been running it ever since. Their motto is "the most coffee-like coffee," and they hope this becomes a space where layers of memories build up with the people you cherish.

One thing that surprised me: the pamphlet actually introduces the staff — the manager, head chef, even the up-and-coming team members! That kind of history makes you feel like you're sharing memories with the people who keep coming back to Waltz. Their pride in the place is genuinely admirable.

This organ was first made in England and used in an American church — apparently it's 200 years old.

What we ordered that day was

  • Café Royale
  • Honor and Chevalier
  • Camembert cheesecake

The receipt is handwritten — such a lovely touch.

Café Royale flambé: how does it taste?

First to arrive was the Café Royale, and its visual performance alone was overwhelming. A special spoon is balanced over a cup of dark espresso, and a sugar cube soaked in alcohol is set on fire to burn off the alcohol.

As the blue flame burns, the caramelized sugar gets stirred right into the espresso before drinking.

Café Royale with a flaming sugar cube

With the first sip, a deep, intense espresso aroma filled my mouth (I'm usually the mild-coffee-only type, so honestly it was pretty bitter for me) — but even as someone who's a bit of a caffeine wimp, I know a great coffee when I taste one, and I think this will be a lifelong memorable experience whenever I think of espresso from now on. The taste was a blend of a faint smoky note and bittersweetness.

The base coffee itself is so good that next time I want to try it as a smoother café latte or a sweet mocaccino.

Signature Honor and Chevalier parfait and Camembert cheesecake

Eye-catching from the first glance, the Honor and Chevalier (₩18,000) will satisfy any dessert lover, no question. There's a reason it's the signature!

On a base of sweet vanilla and chocolate ice cream sit fresh grapefruit, kiwi, orange, and grapes — and the fruit itself is seriously sweet. Honestly, it might be the sweetest fruit I've had recently, it was that good. On top of that is a chewy macaron, which made me gasp with how good it was.

Pairing the bittersweet coffee with the sweet dessert made for the ultimate sweet-and-savory combo — total sweet-salty overload, in the best way.

Last up was the Camembert cheesecake. The distinctively dense, nutty cheese flavor spreads deeply through every bite.

In particular, the combo of adding a bit of the accompanying vanilla ice cream on top of the cake was the real kicker. (As an ice cream fanatic, I genuinely wanted to ask how they made this particular ice cream — it was that unique.)

They're also running a review event, so I'll be sure to participate on my next visit.

Tips before you visit Waltz and Dr. Mahn

  • Visit on a weekday afternoon to avoid the weekend date crowd — you can quietly have the Bukhan River view mostly to yourself
  • Water Garden and Dumulmeori are 5–10 minutes away by car, making a great drive-and-walk combo before or after

Ended the visit with a walk. I fell completely into the Bukhan River view spreading beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows and the dignified, classic mood. 🐾🐱 It was a great place for a romantic date on a special day, or for a drive with your parents. Saved to favorites — ☆
