Muan pork rib platter, 550g on a Sunday open run: Ubokgeum Saenggalbi

In short

Ubokgeum Saenggalbi Mokpo Namak Branch is a charcoal-grill fresh rib restaurant in Namak, Samhyang-eup, Muan, South Jeolla. Arriving right at Sunday opening, the family took a six-person table and ordered one plate of fresh pork ribs (550g) with three bowls of rice and cold noodles, and the staff grilled the ribs at the table — juicy and free of any gamey smell. With steamed egg and soy-marinated crab among the side dishes, Ubokgeum Saenggalbi works well for a family meal out with kids.

Basic side dishes set out after ordering pork short ribs

What side dishes come with the ribs?

The basic side dishes at Ubokgeum Saenggalbi Mokpo Namak Branch came in a nice variety: scallion salad, pickled onion, pickles, radish, kimchi, lettuce, and ssamjang.

Salted fish sauce, salt, garlic, and ssamjang came out too.

Kimchi, wild garlic pickles, soy-pickled onion, and wrapping radish — lots of side dishes perfect for wrapping with the meat.

The lettuce and peppers were fresh, and the seasoned scallion salad was delicious too.

Steamed egg in an earthenware bowl also came out. Great side dish for the kids.

Soy-marinated crab came out too, and it wasn't too salty, good with rice. My husband enjoyed it a lot.

The 550g fresh pork rib platter, grilled at the table by staff

They set charcoal in and put the grill plate on top. They also set up a spot to move cooked meat aside so it wouldn't burn and could stay warm — a nice touch.

A plate of fresh ribs came out, and a staff member grilled it for us directly.

From cutting the meat to grilling it to a nice golden brown, they took care of everything.

Charcoal-grilled fresh rib meat was even more delicious. The moment it hit my mouth, rich juices burst out, and with no gamey smell at all, the nutty, clean flavor of the meat itself filled my mouth.

They moved the fully grilled meat onto a plate in bite-sized pieces, which made it easy to eat.

We dipped some in salt and some in fish sauce. Ubokgeum's fresh ribs had this savory depth that got better the more you chewed — really a standout.

We also wrapped the grilled ribs in lettuce with wild garlic pickles and ssamjang.

Cold noodles to finish, 7,000 won

After finishing the meat, the cold noodles arrived — a generous, filling portion. Ice floated in the cold, refreshing broth, with springy noodles topped neatly with cucumber, pickled radish, and egg garnish.

Having noodles after the meat cleared the palate and was delicious. The noodles had just the right chewiness, easy to slurp down.

I gave our second child the noodles without the sauce, and she slurped them down happily.

At Ubokgeum Saenggalbi Mokpo Namak Branch, we got to taste the essence of quality fresh ribs. The meat was fresh, the side dishes were neat and well-made, the service was kind, and the cold noodles for dessert cleaned the palate perfectly — we ate very well. The kids enjoyed it too, so we're planning to visit again.
