Gyeongju mochi shop with homemade-style rice cake skin: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a fruit mochi dessert shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, selling yogurt mochi made with seasonal fruit for 5,500–7,000 won. Pineapple, peach yogurt, mango yogurt and gold kiwi were bought and compared, and the Tareudang mochi skin was less chewy than a store-bought glutinous rice cake and closer to homemade rice cake made with regular non-glutinous rice. The personal number one was the sweet pineapple mochi.

What is Tareudang? A fruit mochi shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju

Tareudang is a fruit mochi dessert shop at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk, on Hwangnidang-gil. It's open daily from 11:00 to 19:00 with no closed days, and parking is not available if you drive.

A cute little shop with fruit mochi that's pretty to look at and pretty to eat :) It's known for its giant fruit mochi, so I bought a few different flavors to try.

Fruit mochi at Tareudang on Hwangnidang-gil

Hi, this is MEMO. Lately, everyone visiting Gyeongju seems to make sure to stop by Tareudang for Hwangnam mochi. I got curious too and paid a visit. The mochi are really huge! The photos looked so pretty that I really wanted to try one.

The menu I ordered was peach yogurt, mango yogurt mochi, gold kiwi mochi, and pineapple mochi.

I saw YouTuber Sanghee buying mochi here too, so it must be a well-known spot.

At Tareudang, the shop itself is so pretty and the mochi are wrapped in colorful packaging — impossible not to buy. The mochi lined up in the showcase were just too cute.

They're wrapped snugly in hanji (traditional Korean paper), which is really cute, and the colors make them fun just to look at. So which is my favorite flavor here?

So I bought 4 different flavors to find out :)

Mango yogurt mochi and its homemade rice cake skin

First up, the mango yogurt I was most curious about! I was surprised by how big the mango chunk inside was. You can tell they use only fresh, good-quality fruit.

Yogurt mochi somehow feels like it won't add as much weight as one with fresh cream?! The mango inside was fresh and good. The unique thing about Tareudang's mochi is this outer skin — surprisingly... it tastes like mochi made at home with regular rice rather than glutinous rice? It's not as chewy as the store-bought glutinous rice cakes, but it has that homemade-by-mom chapssaltteok (sweet rice cake) kind of feel?

There's also the fun of unwrapping it while wondering what flavor you'll get~~~ 🙏❤️

Fresh mango wrapped in mochi skin

The mango hadn't browned at all and was a whole fresh piece inside, so mango lovers would really love this ~? Recommended! The skin has that soft, plain rice-cake taste — makes you wonder if it's really just there to wrap the fruit~~

It looks even bigger in person. It's a giant mochi. Eating just one will fill you up, big enough to sub for a whole meal! ☺️ Tareudang's mochi are generously sized~ Can you get a sense from the photos of what that skin tastes like~? haha

My number one: the pineapple mochi

And the one I was most looking forward to — pineapple mochi! Apparently mochi pairs surprisingly well with pineapple. For me, it's the #1 pick. The sweet pineapple flesh goes really well with the mochi.

Frozen overnight and eaten the next day as ice mochi

Since the mochi were so big, I froze two and ate them the next day. When buying, they told me it's fine to eat them half-thawed as ice mochi. The fruit was frozen solid, and I think it would've been even better slightly thawed. The kiwi was really tangy.

How the peach yogurt mochi tasted

What kind of peach did they even use? It was tart and sweet even frozen — makes me wonder if peach might've come out #1 if I'd eaten it thawed.

Anyway, here's my Tareudang ranking:

  • 1st: Pineapple + fresh cream
  • 2nd: Peach yogurt
  • 3rd: Mango yogurt

Cooler bag for a Naver receipt review

I got a cute cooler bag for leaving a Naver receipt review :) It was so convenient to carry around for the rest of the trip that I was glad I got one.
