Hwangnidan-gil bakery free Americano and 3-pie set: Gyeongju Tokyo Pie

There seem to be more and more great dessert shops popping up in Gyeongju lately. I love dessert, so I've been saving and visiting a few spots, and one of them was a handmade pie shop run by a Japanese baker himself. Here's my review of Gyeongju Tokyo Pie!

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie hours and parking

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is open Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri from 11:30 to 19:00, and Sat, Sun from 11:30 to 20:00, with every Tuesday off. Keep in mind it closes early once ingredients run out, so plan ahead if you're going later in the day. For parking, there's a nearby paid Hwangnidan lot you can use.

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a takeout-only bakery a 3-minute walk from the main street of Hwangnidan-gil, and it seems like a lot of tourists pick up a box as a Gyeongju dessert or Hwangnidan-gil gift on their way home.

True to being a Gyeongju Tokyo apple pie specialty shop, there were stacks of apple crates right next to the store.

I picked up the 3-flavor premium gift set to share with my family at home. The set comes with 4 apple pies plus a choice of red bean or chocolate, and I went with 4 apple pies + red bean. For reference, pies are also available individually. Getting the set is nice because you get to try several kinds at once.

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie runs several events: on your birthday, you get 50% off one pie (usable up to two weeks before or after your birthday), joining the timer event gets you a free pie, and joining the Naver receipt event gets you a free Americano. We joined in and got our Americano.

When are the pies baked, and how do you store them?

Chocolate, red bean, and apple pies are all laid out on display, and they bake pies twice a day — once at 11:30 and again at 14:30 — so everything is baked and sold the same day. Nice 👍👍

There are two ways to store the pies: refrigerate for up to 2 days from purchase, or freeze for up to 1 year. After refrigerating, you can either air fry at 180°C for about 5 minutes or eat it cold, but after freezing, half-thaw it first, then air fry at 180°C for 7-10 minutes.

Each Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is individually wrapped in paper so you can hold it comfortably in one hand while eating.

How did the apple pie at Gyeongju Tokyo Pie taste?

The signature menu item, the 'Gyeongju Tokyo Pie,' uses carefully selected 100% domestic Fuji apples aged for a set time to bring out the apples' natural sweetness and tartness, packed with rich juice and texture. It's wrapped in layers of pastry made with natural butter — as someone who loves pastry, I was very satisfied.

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie isn't sharply sweet — it feels more like the apple's own natural sweetness brought forward, so it's not overly sugary and I think adults would like it too. I ate the leftovers straight from the fridge the next day, and it was still nicely crisp — loved that.

Tokyo red bean pie and chocolate pie compared

The Tokyo red bean pie is packed with red bean paste inside, and the red bean itself isn't sweet — more plain and mellow. If you like sweeter things, I'd recommend the Tokyo chocolate pie instead. The chocolate one looked really good too, so I'll have to try it next time I get the chance.

Is the Gyeongju Tokyo Pie set worth buying as a Hwangnidan-gil gift?

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a nice size for eating one-handed, so it works well as a quick snack when you're peckish. They also sell it as a 3-flavor gift set, and since it's not too sweet, I think it'd make a great gift for adults too. If you're into dessert in general, it's worth trying haha.
