In short

It had been a while since I’d really had some proper meat, so I headed over toward Sosabeol in Pyeongtaek. This time, I visited Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi (이화정 숯불돼지갈비) in Jukbaek-dong. I came across it naturally while looking for a meat restaurant that would be nice for a family meal.

It’s a fairly large place, and I loved that there was less to worry about when it came to parking or seats. The address is 1662 Manse-ro, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.

An easy-parking spot that was great for a family meal

Food matters when you go to a meat restaurant, but if parking is inconvenient, you’re tired before you even begin, right? Here, the parking area felt generous for the size of the restaurant, so it looked fine for visiting with a group too. Once I went inside, the scale really was impressive.

The tables weren’t packed tightly together, and the whole space felt roomy, making for a comfortable atmosphere for dining with several people.

Since it’s a charcoal-grill restaurant, I was a little worried the dining room might be hot, but the air conditioning was running nicely, so it was more comfortable than expected throughout the meal.

What We Ordered at Ihwajeong

Looking over the menu, I decided on the marinated pork grill without much hesitation that day. We ordered three servings of marinated pork grill, plus bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles) to finish after the meat. They also had marinated pork galbi and beef rib meat, so I’d like to try something else next time.

A Generous Table Set from the Side Dishes Onward

After ordering and waiting a little, the food began arriving at the table one dish at a time. It wasn’t the kind of place where only the meat appears on its own—the variety of banchan (Korean side dishes) quickly filled up the table.

There was a refreshing salad, pickled onions, and several other side dishes to go with everything.

Personally, I love it when a meat restaurant has lots of these accompaniments, because you can switch up your palate as you eat the meat.

There were also things you don’t see quite as often at meat restaurants, such as marinated raw crab and potato salad, which made it fun to pick at a bit of everything.

You can help yourself to more side dishes or ssam (wrap) greens at the self-service bar, so it was easy to add exactly what we needed.

Extra-Appetizing Thick Marinated Pork Grill

Finally, the main marinated pork grill arrived. The meat was quite thick, with noticeably more heft than typical marinated meat. Putting all three servings on at once made the portion look pretty generous too. Once the charcoal was hot, we put the meat on and started grilling.

As the meat sizzled and the aroma of the marinade rose up, I thought once again that meat really tastes best grilled over charcoal, haha.

Marinated meat can burn on the outside first if you’re not careful, so we turned it now and then and cooked it slowly.

Once the meat had browned nicely, I cut it into bite-size pieces and found it had cooked beautifully, still moist all the way through.

One bite and I could really feel the satisfying chew that comes with thick-cut meat. A subtle charcoal aroma had soaked into the outside, while the marinade was sweet and savory, making it a great match for rice. Best of all, it wasn’t just aggressively sweet—it was the kind of flavor that kept me reaching for another piece.

With the pickled onions, one of my favorite banchan, it was clean-tasting and delicious as expected.

After Meat, Naengmyeon Is Basically Essential

Once we had eaten a fair amount of meat, naengmyeon naturally came to mind. So we ordered bibim naengmyeon to finish. At a meat restaurant, naengmyeon feels less like an option and more like an essential, lol. The sweet-spicy sauce was evenly mixed through the noodles, with a gentle fragrance of sesame oil too.

The tangy, spicy cold noodles alongside the sweetish meat made my mouth feel so much fresher that I kept eating. I debated ordering two servings or three, and I’m really glad we went with three... hehe. Even after filling up on meat, we finished almost all the naengmyeon too.

Ihwajeong, a Nice Choice for a Family Meal in Pyeongtaek Sosabeol

Charcoal-grilled meal spread suited to a family outing

With ample parking and a spacious restaurant, it seemed like a low-stress option when you’re looking for a family meal or somewhere for a group. Add in the thick marinated pork grilled over charcoal, and it really felt like I’d had a proper meat meal. There was a wide range of banchan and a self-service bar, so it was easy to refill whatever we needed during the meal. Finishing with bibim naengmyeon made it a seriously filling meal—done and dusted! This is totally a hot tip... don’t just have the galbi; try it with naengmyeon too :)
