Couples' dinner at Gyodong Jjamppong, a Cheongju Chinese restaurant

In short

Gyodong Jjamppong Yongjeong Branch is a budget-friendly Chinese restaurant tucked between apartment blocks in Yongjeong-dong, Cheongju. A couple ordered jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) for 9,000 won, jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) for 6,000 won and sweet-and-sour pork for 18,000 won, finding chewy aged noodles, a rich jjamppong broth good enough to mix with rice, and generous chunks of meat in the pork. It's a solid pick for a filling meal without breaking the bank.

Here's my review of Gyodong Jjamppong, in Yongjeong-dong, Cheongju — one of the nation's top 5 jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) spots, great value, and a place where you can even try mini mianbaoxia (shrimp toast) and mini sweet-and-sour pork, with really delicious broth!

This Yongjeong-dong favorite, Gyodong Jjamppong, is also close to the Lotte Mart in Yongam-dong and sits right between apartment complexes, so it's great to stop by after grocery shopping, or just as easy to order delivery haha. There are set menus for delivery orders too, so it's even better value that way~!

The dining room — good for groups or family meals?

The interior has lots of tables and felt spacious, so it was comfortable to use! I'd recommend it for group gatherings or family dinners too haha. The restroom is shared with the rest of the building~

Menu and prices

Here's the menu at this Yongjeong-dong favorite, Gyodong Jjamppong~! With today's prices, jjamppong under 10,000 won and jjajangmyeon at 6,000 won feels like really good value haha.

They also have mini sweet-and-sour pork, 9 pieces plus 2 fried dumplings for 7,000 won, and mini mianbaoxia, 4 pieces plus 2 fried dumplings for 7,000 won, which was nice because you can try them without much of a commitment~

You get danmuji (pickled radish), onion, and soy sauce with chili flakes as basics, and if that's not enough you can grab more from the self-serve bar!

Ordering jjamppong, jjajangmyeon and sweet-and-sour pork

We ordered jjamppong (9,000 won), jjajangmyeon (6,000 won), and sweet-and-sour pork (18,000 won)!

6,000 won jjajangmyeon

Even at 6,000 won, the jjajangmyeon came in a generous portion, and the wide noodles soaked up the sauce really well!

This Yongjeong-dong favorite, Gyodong Jjamppong, apparently uses noodles aged for a long time. You could definitely tell — the noodles were chewy, which made it even tastier~ Sprinkling on extra chili flakes gives it a slight kick that makes it even more delicious haha.

Jjamppong broth you'll end up mixing with rice

The jjamppong came topped with crisp bean sprouts, and squid, meat, wood ear mushroom, shrimp, and more all came together really well, so delicious! Even my husband, who can't handle spice, hogged the jjamppong and ate it happily lol. Maybe because the noodles were aged, they stayed chewy and never got mushy, so it was chewy and tasty all the way to the last bite~

The jjamppong broth in particular was so good that I'd definitely recommend mixing rice into it! Another customer in the dining room mixed rice into their jjamppong twice haha. They also sell jjamppong sundubu (soft tofu stew), so now I'm curious and want to try it next time~

The mini sweet-and-sour pork might actually be the better call

We ordered the regular sweet-and-sour pork and the pieces of meat were huge — the portion was really generous for the price! If we'd known it would be this much, we would have ordered the mini instead haha.

Since we wanted to try it a couple different ways, we ate half dipped in sauce and half dipped in a soy sauce and chili flake mix my husband made~ We thought we wouldn't be able to finish it given the portion, but the meat was clean-tasting and the batter wasn't greasy, so we never got tired of it and finished it all~

To sum up

If you're looking for a good-value Chinese restaurant in Yongjeong-dong, Cheongju with delicious jjamppong broth, I'd recommend Gyodong Jjamppong Yongjeong Branch~! It's also close to Geumcheon-dong, Yongam-dong, and Dongnam District, so it's a good jjajangmyeon and jjamppong delivery pick too!

The jjamppong and jjajangmyeon prices weren't a burden at all, and the portions were generous, so the value was really good — especially the jjamppong broth, which had a flavor I kept thinking about haha. It's packed with bean sprouts, seafood, and meat, and the aged noodles were chewy and delicious! The sweet-and-sour pork had big chunks of meat and a generous portion, so next time the mini size should be plenty haha. If you want to eat your fill from jjamppong to sweet-and-sour pork without worrying about the price, give Gyodong Jjamppong, a Yongjeong-dong, Cheongju favorite, a try~!
