Exterior and interior atmosphere of Gyodong Jjamppong in Yongjeong-dong

The exterior grabs you right away with its bold red sign. I needed to cure a hangover that day, so while searching for hangover food and jjamppong spots in Cheongju, this place gave off serious restaurant vibes! The line "if it's not good, it's free" telegraphs the owner's confidence, and honestly, that's a pretty low-risk bet 🌶️

The interior is clean overall and the table spacing is comfortable, making it a great spot for solo dining or just eating at ease.

Gyodong Jjamppong in Yongjeong-dong offers a solid lineup from staples like jjamppong and jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) to sweet-and-sour pork and mempōsha (stuffed fried bread). You can also choose your spice level, which is perfect for anyone who loves it hot. What impressed me for a Chinese restaurant was the range of specialty dishes like beef brisket jjamppong hot pot and fried squid — great for groups drinking over a hot pot, so it'd work well for a work dinner too.

On the wall, there was also a mini sweet-and-sour pork and mempōsha menu listed — a clever setup letting solo diners in Cheongju, or anyone who finds a full side dish too much, enjoy a small portion paired with fried dumplings ✨

Side dishes at the self-serve bar
It was nice having a self-serve bar for easy access to extra side dishes. Basic sides like onion, kimchi, and pickled radish were all set up there.
What I ordered — jjamppong and glutinous rice sweet-and-sour pork
- Jjamppong — ₩9,000
- Glutinous rice sweet-and-sour pork — ₩18,000
Jjamppong, the whole reason I came for a hangover cure! Great value at under ₩10,000, packed with seafood and looking properly spicy, plus freshly fried golden-brown sweet-and-sour pork — I felt rough, but the sight alone got my mouth watering :)

Crunchy bean sprouts piled on top of the jjamppong, and that smoky, spicy smell wafting up! My delicious-food radar went off before I even took a bite :)

Aged noodles and a peppery, sharp broth
Maybe because the noodles are aged for a long time, they had a great chewy, springy texture. I personally love pepper, and the distinctive sharp pepper flavor soaked into both broth and noodles gave it a lovely spicy depth.

This is why it's a great jjamppong spot in Cheongju — from the first spoonful, you get deep smoky heat, plenty of seafood like shrimp, squid, and mussels, plus meat too, making the broth even richer and more full-bodied — perfect for curing a hangover!

Freshly fried glutinous rice sweet-and-sour pork
Crispy pork, straight out of the fryer 🤍 Just from the color of the batter you could tell it was clean, crispy outside and chewy inside — the glutinous rice sweet-and-sour pork! The batter wasn't overly thick either — the meat itself was nice and thick, giving it a really satisfying bite.

Uniquely, the sweet-and-sour sauce at Gyodong Jjamppong has red cabbage mixed in, so it looks pretty and the texture is great too! Dipped in the sweet-tangy sauce, the pork's richness blends beautifully with the sauce — crispy outside, moist inside, a textbook example of properly done sweet-and-sour pork :)

To finish off at Gyodong Jjamppong, I piled the leftover seafood onto a spoon for the perfect last bite ✨ The seafood and meat in the jjamppong had no off smell at all and had a really appealing texture :)

Would I come back?
Gyodong Jjamppong was a perfect hangover-cure jjamppong spot in Cheongju, with a deeply smoky, spicy broth, chewy noodles, and a great seafood-and-meat combo! And the pairing with the juicy glutinous rice sweet-and-sour pork made this Yongjeong-dong jjamppong spot complete. Since it's such a low-risk bet, I'd absolutely come back — 100% yes.
