Ocean-view black pork with mom in Seogwipo, Jeju: Jeju Healing Dwaeji

In short

Jeju Healing Dwaeji is an ocean-view black pork barbecue restaurant on Maljil-ro in Gangjeong-dong, Seogwipo, Jeju. For the first meal of a trip with her mom, the writer ordered a han-geun (600g) of black pork for 65,000 won, healing kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), and rice, paired with four kinds of salt, melject (fermented anchovy sauce) and grilled tangerines. Wind pushed them from the grassy outdoor tables to an indoor spot by the picture windows, but both the view and the meat were fully satisfying.

A must-visit spot in Gangjeong-dong, Seogwipo, Jeju: Jeju Healing Dwaeji.

I came to Jeju with my mom, and I agonized over what to eat for our first meal. But since we were in Jeju, obviously the first meal had to be black pork, right?

Jeju black pork enjoyed with an ocean view

I went looking for a place where I could enjoy delicious black pork along with a Jeju ocean view, and found Jeju Healing Dwaeji. Here's my review of a proper healing session!

Jeju Healing Dwaeji is a 5-minute walk from the Seogwipo Cruise Terminal. I rented a car at Jeju Airport and drove straight there, and it took about 50 minutes. There's a private lot right in front, so no need to worry about parking!

An exterior with both the sea and Hallasan in view, plus grassy outdoor tables

The drive from the airport to the restaurant was healing in itself. Cruising along the coastal road, the sea slowly came into view — and oh, the ocean, ㅠㅠㅠ. By the time we were almost at the restaurant, I couldn't just drive past, so I pulled over, got out, and spent ages taking photos before setting off again haha.

View of the Seogwipo sea stretching in front of the restaurant

When we arrived at Jeju Healing Dwaeji, I understood right away why it's known for its view.

The Jeju sea stretches out in front of the restaurant, and behind it Hallasan peeks through a light veil of clouds — a view that gives even the Alps (?) a run for their money.

In front of the restaurant there's a wide lawn with outdoor tables set up.

I imagined that on a nice day, sitting outside looking at the sea while grilling black pork would be pure healing. Now I totally get why the restaurant is called 'Jeju Healing Dwaeji.'

When it's windy, the indoor seats by the picture windows are great too

It was quite windy for us, so we ended up seated indoors — a bit of a shame, but still good.

The interior is really clean, with a huge picture window facing the sea, so it almost feels like eating outdoors 👍🏻 If you time your visit for sunset and have black pork with a glass of wine here, it'll be an unforgettable evening for sure!

On one wall there were lots of autographs from celebrities.

There's also a side door connecting to 'Golden Hour Café' next door. Apparently there's also accommodation upstairs in the same building. My mom said next time she comes to Jeju, she wants to book a room here. I agree!!!

Since we made it all the way to a black pork restaurant, of course we had to have black pork. Jeju Healing Dwaeji says it only uses authentic black pork raised in Jeju. There are also couple sets and family sets, which pair black pork with wine, great if you want a drink alongside your meal. For rice dishes, there's doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and kimchi jjigae.

We ordered a black pork han-geun for 65,000 won, healing kimchi jjigae for 7,000 won, and rice for 1,000 won.

By the way, if you participate in the Naver receipt review event, you get a cheonhyehyang (Jeju citrus) juice, so definitely take part!

Side dishes and four kinds of salt

Generous spread of side dishes

First, a generous spread of side dishes was laid out.

Plates of baek-kimchi and mu-saengchae side dishes

Onion, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), lettuce wraps, mu-saengchae (spicy radish salad), cabbage pickles, yeolmu jangajji (pickled young radish greens), olives and jalapeños, and wasabi-mayo sauce — the best! It was even better knowing the side dishes are made in-house using local Jeju ingredients.

Plate of four salts including baengnyeoncho salt

The salt selection especially stood out — pepper salt, baengnyeoncho (prickly pear cactus) salt, organic green tea salt, and garlic salt, four kinds in total. To really taste the black pork itself, salt is the way to go. The saltiness and savoriness shift subtly depending on which one you use.

Yeolmu jangajji that got refilled twice

And this yeolmu jangajji — first time trying it, and it wasn't salty at all, just so delicious that I refilled it twice haha.

The black pork han-geun comes pre-seared

Finally, the black pork we'd been waiting for arrived!

Thick raw black pork topped with tangerines

First they show you the raw meat — thick cuts with a gorgeous rosy color ✨. And seeing tangerines on top of the meat, yep, this is definitely Jeju 🤣

After you check out the raw meat, they bring it back pre-seared. The pre-seared black pork just needs a little more time over the gentle charcoal heat. So easy.

Finally, my first bite of Jeju black pork in years ㅠㅠㅠ. The juices just burst out 😇

Cross-section of the sliced grilled black pork

Even though the meat is really thick, it's never dry, but not overly soft either — it keeps just the right amount of springy bite. Worlds apart from regular samgyeopsal (pork belly) or ogyeopsal in terms of juiciness and richness!!

Wrapped it in lettuce, dipped it in melject, paired it with yeolmu jangajji, dipped it in wasabi mayo sauce — the works.

Grilled tangerines and black pork on the grill

And I also tried grilled tangerines for the first time — they had a richer, more refined flavor than regular tangerines. Went really well with the black pork.

Finishing with healing kimchi jjigae and rice

It felt like too much of a shame to just stop there, so we added kimchi jjigae and rice too. Gotta finish off with some carbs.

Healing kimchi jjigae with tofu and meat

The kimchi jjigae was loaded with tofu and meat, clean-tasting yet deep in flavor. Totally hit the spot ✌🏻 We ate every last bite.

Overall thoughts on Jeju Healing Dwaeji

I had high expectations for our first meal of the trip, and it exceeded them!! The drive there in the rental car already felt like a real vacation, and the view when we arrived is something I think I'll remember for a long time. Would it be an exaggeration to say I'd have been satisfied with just the view, even if the food had been so-so?

But the food was delicious too! The black pork was thick, savory, and juicy — so good. The side dishes and kimchi jjigae were also totally satisfying! I'm so glad I found this place. Next time I travel to Jeju, I'm definitely coming back!
