Jongno bakery choco pies frozen and dipped in milk: Ssuk's Choco Pie

When you go to Gwangjang Market, you eat the classics — yukhoe (raw beef), kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes). Those are all great, of course, but I heard there's a dessert spot that's the hottest thing in Gwangjang Market right now, so I went and checked it out ^_________^

Finding Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul in Gwangjang Market

Come out of Exit 7 of Jongno 5-ga Station and walk toward Namdaemun Gamegol Sonmandu — you'll hit South Gate 1. Facing the entrance, look left! If a bright green sign catches your eye, you've arrived.

I heard you can get the taste of the Gwangju flagship store here in Seoul too, so I went in with high expectations —

Fitting for a dessert shop built around mugwort (ssuk), the interior is full of that green mugwort vibe. As a certified green-color fanatic, this is honestly the most eye-catching shop in the whole market haha. The vibe is so pretty I couldn't stop taking photos!

What ingredients do they use?

The ingredients are on a different level. Most are domestically sourced, everything's fresh, and they use good flour, eggs, everything down to the last detail — confident enough to display all the origin info.

On top of that —

No artificial colors, no preservatives, no emulsifiers, no shortening, no margarine

Since I'm already at Gwangjang Market, I wanted to buy plenty, but it's hard to decide which flavors and how many to get 🤤

Haepung Mugwort Injeolmi, Red Bean, and Udo Peanut are flavors adults will love, and

Nonsan Strawberry and Choco will be huge hits with kids 🤔

How long can you keep them? How to eat them frozen

Refrigerated, these choco pies are recommended to be eaten within 8 days. If you think you won't finish them in time, frozen storage works fine for up to 30 days. And you know what's great about desserts like this — freezing them slightly and dipping in milk is amazing?! They're delicious even frozen, so it's worth stocking up on a bunch in one go haha.

How was the texture and taste?

Ooh~~ you can probably tell just from the photos — this isn't the dry, hard texture of a regular choco pie. It's incredibly moist and chewy, and instead of marshmallow, there's a thick layer of cream inside, so it feels healthier.

Mugwort, injeolmi

The must-buy menu here! The mugwort aroma and the nutty flavor of injeolmi (glutinous rice cake) are both fully present — people with old-school Korean taste buds will lose their minds haha.

Udo Peanut

The ultimate in nuttiness. The texture of crushed peanut bits mixed in with the cream is seriously addictive.

On a whole different level from regular peanut butter — a luxe peanut flavor 🥜

Strawberry, red bean, real choco

Instead of artificial sweetness, the natural flavor of the ingredients comes through strongly, so you don't get tired of it even after eating a lot.
