Oil pasta skeptic won over at Odd Bird Oliver, a Jeonpo brunch spot

In short

Odd Bird Oliver is a European-style brunch restaurant on a side street in Jeonpo (Dongseong-ro), Busanjin-gu, Busan, known for its focaccia sandwiches and pasta. The order was jamón French toast (17.0) and bottarga aglio olio (18.0), and even for someone who normally dislikes oil pasta, the savoury bottarga with plump shrimp was outstanding. Portions at Odd Bird Oliver are generous, and every plate was cleared — an easy return visit on any brunch craving.

Today I want to post about Odd Bird Oliver, a European-style brunch spot in Jeonpo, Busan!

Odd Bird Oliver is famous for its focaccia sandwiches and pasta. I have a soft spot for buildings with European charm, and both the overall vibe and the menu were so much my style that I had to go check it out!

There's no dedicated parking since it's in a Jeonpo back alley, but it's close to Jeonpo Station, so getting there by public transit was easy!

Inside Odd Bird Oliver: group tables, window seats and solo seating

True to a focaccia specialty spot, a giant focaccia caught my eye the moment I walked in — it must have just come out, since the smell of freshly baked bread was drifting through the air 🥖

The interior was larger than I expected, with a variety of seating from a 7-person group table down to standard 4-tops and 3-tops, and

Table set before ordering

So what I ordered at Odd Bird Oliver was two dishes: Jamón French Toast (17.0) and Bottarga Aglio Olio (18.0), and

Jamón French toast and bottarga aglio olio served on the table

I was curious about both, and while I was debating which to get, I saw the jamón French toast at the table next to me and just couldn't resist ordering it too hahahahahahahaha

A plate of jamón French toast

Jamon French toast (17.0): one of the best I've had

The Jamón French Toast (17.0) is a sweet-and-salty, can't-stop-eating French toast served with jamón, ricotta cheese, and banana brûlée. It came with two big chunks of French toast, two pieces of banana brûlée, jamón, nuts, and ricotta cheese, and

A bite of French toast topped with banana brûlée and ricotta

when you cut the toast into bite-sized pieces and pile on the brûlée, jamón, and ricotta all at once, heaven appears. The toast was pretty thick, so I worried it might be bland, but there was sweet syrup pooled at the bottom, and combined with the salty jamón, the nutty-salty ricotta, and the crackly brûlée texture, it's honestly in the top 3 French toasts I've ever had

Cross-section of the thick French toast

Bottarga aglio olio (18.0): the oil pasta that changed my mind

The Bottarga Aglio Olio (18.0) is an oil pasta where bottarga's umami, garlic, and olive oil come together perfectly, with really plump shrimp cut into bite-sized pieces, and

Bottarga aglio olio with plump shrimp

personally, oil pasta isn't usually my thing, but I think that's just because I hadn't tried Odd Bird Oliver's version yet. It wasn't just salty from the bottarga — it had genuine, delicious umami, a spicy-nutty-sweet kick from the garlic, and the combination of plump shrimp, butter, and oil's richness was just so, so good • •

Verdict: big portions, and not a bite left

Of all the brunch places I've been to recently, this might be the tastiest, and the portions were pretty generous, so even though I was full I cleaned every plate hahahahahahaha. On days when I'm craving brunch, I think I'll come straight here without any hesitation.
