On this Jeju trip, I visited Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥), a restaurant near the Jungmun tourist complex. This place is already famous, and I got to enjoy aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap (grilled mackerel wrapped in lettuce) with abalone hot pot rice, plus unlimited abalone porridge on top. Great spot to stop for a filling meal in Jeju.

Is the interior okay for visiting with kids?
Walking in, the space was pretty spacious, so eating with a kid wasn't much of a hassle.

Self-serve banchan and wrap veggies
One thing I really liked here! At the self-serve bar, you could grab whatever banchan (side dishes) or wrap veggies you needed. The braised mackerel was already good over rice, but placing a piece of mackerel on a fresh lettuce leaf and wrapping it with rice made it way tastier.

If you ran out, you could comfortably grab more without feeling awkward about it. And the abalone porridge was especially satisfying!

Unlimited abalone porridge, bulgogi, and japchae
Being able to eat delicious abalone porridge unlimited was perfect as a starter to tide you over. My little one polished off a whole bowl too, haha. On top of that, there was a lot more unlimited food, like bulgogi and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry).

Just note that the abalone porridge is free only for guests visiting between 9am and noon!

You can't have mackerel ssam-bap without the wrap veggies, right? If you love ssam (wrap dishes), you can take as much as you want and be satisfied.
How was the mackerel ssam-bap menu?
Finally, the main dish arrives!

Just looking at it makes you crave rice. The seasoning was well soaked into the mackerel, making it easy to pull the flesh off and eat it with rice.

The mackerel's distinct savory flavor paired well with the seasoning and rice. It tasted even better eaten together with the abalone hot pot rice than mackerel alone.

While traveling Jeju, I eat a lot of black pork and braised hairtail, but sometimes having a filling meal like this mackerel ssam-bap is nice too.
The flower garden outside
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap has its surroundings decorated prettily with flowers, so it felt more like arriving at a Jeju tourist spot than a restaurant.

It seemed like it would be especially pretty during rose season. If you come when the roses are in full bloom, the scenery surrounded by flowers would look even prettier — I'm thinking of coming back then, haha. You get to come for tasty mackerel ssam-bap and also enjoy pretty flowers, killing two birds with one stone!
One-line review
If you're looking for a very Jeju-style meal in Jungmun, Seogwipo, mackerel ssam-bap seems like a solid choice, haha.
I especially liked the combination of unlimited abalone porridge + unlimited wrap veggies + mackerel ssam-bap — it makes for a really filling meal, haha.
