After stopping by Square One, we were looking for a place to eat near Yeonsu Station when we found Yeonsu Gopchang Yeonsu Main Branch. We ordered the Yeonsu Gopchang combo set, which comes with stir-fried vegetable gopchang, salt-grilled makchang, gopchang hot pot, muksabal (jelly salad in cold broth), and fried rice — it came out so generous that two of us were completely full.

What I liked about this place was that gopchang (beef intestine), makchang (beef rectum), soup, and fried rice were all on one table. The restaurant had a retro pojangmacha (street-stall bar) vibe, and with the doors thrown wide open it even felt like an open-air night market. On top of that there was a self-serve bar and some surprisingly thoughtful extra services, so let me share the menu, the atmosphere, and parking info.

Yeonsu Gopchang sits on the restaurant street in Yeonsu-dong. We drove over after stopping by Square One, and while we worried about parking on a restaurant street, we were able to park right in front of the restaurant when we visited.

That said, the space in front may not always be available depending on the day, so keep that in mind. The nearby Neulbom underground public parking lot and the Matgoeul-gil public parking lot both offer 2 hours free, so if you're driving, check those out too.

Open the doors and it feels like an open-air night market — a retro interior

The restaurant was quite a bit bigger inside than it looked from outside. Rather than the sleek, shiny look of newer restaurants these days, it leaned into a retro pojangmacha feel — the kind of place that makes you crave gopchang with a shot of soju. There were plenty of tables further inside too, so it looked comfortable for larger groups.

What I especially liked was the structure that lets you open the doors wide. On a cool evening with the doors open, even the indoor seating feels like an open-air night market. Combined with the retro atmosphere, it suited a gopchang restaurant really well.

And the moment we sat down, the apron caught my eye. It read "I'll protect my restaurant's guests" — a great line, and honestly, it does protect your clothes from oil and sauce.

Low-temperature aged for 24 hours at 2°C

According to the signage inside, the restaurant draws on over 10 years of hands-on preparation experience and ages the meat for 24 hours at 2°C in a dedicated aging chamber.

They say this is Yeonsu Gopchang's own aging method, developed to keep the meat tender and nutty rather than chewy. It also mentioned daily cleanliness and hygiene checks along with regular deep cleaning and maintenance — that level of attention to management was impressive.

Ordering via table kiosk

You order using the kiosk at each table.

While browsing the menu, I noticed an "extra services" section. Curious, I tapped in, and it let you request various items you might need.

  • Hair tie
  • Lap blanket
  • Disposable floss
  • Apron
  • First-aid items
  • Deodorizer
  • Phone charging

I've occasionally seen hair ties or aprons offered before, but this was the first time I'd seen floss, deodorizer, and phone charging available through a kiosk. Deodorizer in particular caught my attention, since the smell of gopchang tends to cling to your clothes — I thought, "this place is surprisingly thoughtful."

Yeonsu Gopchang menu and the combo set

The menu was more varied than I expected — stir-fried vegetable gopchang, salt-grilled makchang, seasoned grilled makchang, teriyaki makchang, spicy "flame" makchang, and gopchang hot pot. Since it was our first visit, we chose the combo set that includes a bit of everything.

  • Stir-fried vegetable gopchang for 1
  • Salt-grilled makchang for 1
  • Gopchang hot pot
  • Sesame oil fried rice for 1
  • Acorn jelly salad
  • Complimentary liver and sundae (blood sausage)

As the dishes came out one by one and filled the table, I thought, "wait... can two of us really finish all this?" haha. It looked even more generous laid out on the table than the menu names suggested.

Wrap the stir-fried vegetable gopchang in perilla leaves

The first thing I reached for was the stir-fried vegetable gopchang. I ate the gopchang together with the vegetables, and in between tried it wrapped with perilla leaves or pickled radish.

My favorite combination was perilla leaf + vegetable gopchang + garlic. Since the gopchang came seasoned, wrapping it with perilla leaf worked really well, and naturally I started craving rice too. If you enjoy wrapping food in leaves, try this combination.

Salt-grilled makchang

Next was the salt-grilled makchang. The vegetable gopchang we had before was a seasoned dish, so switching to the salt-grilled makchang changed the mood completely. Having two different-style dishes on one table meant we could pick based on our mood, and not having to choose between gopchang or makchang was exactly why I was glad we ordered the combo.

Muksabal was a refreshing side

Muksabal (acorn jelly in cold broth) also came with the combo set.

Muksabal served with the combo set

After eating rich dishes like gopchang and makchang, a bite of the cool muksabal was great for cleansing the palate in between.

It was a light dish to have alongside the mains, and I kept reaching for it more often than expected.

Liver and sundae, on the house

When we visited, liver and sundae (blood sausage) also came out as complimentary extras. They were great to pick at between the main dishes — a bite of sundae while eating gopchang, a bite of liver while waiting for the hot pot. At this point my friend and I both said at the same time, "this is definitely drinking food..."

But since we'd driven that day, we settled for pouring ourselves soft drinks instead, feeling a little sorry about it. No drinking and driving, ever :)

Gopchang hot pot in a stone bowl

The combo set also included gopchang hot pot in a stone bowl. It was nice to have a hot broth to turn to in between the grilled and stir-fried dishes.

The moment we tasted the hot pot, my friend said, "ah, this is soju food." I immediately said, "no way, this is rice food." One of us reaching for soju, the other for rice. For me, having broth made the meal feel more like an actual dinner, which I liked.

Looking at the menu, I noticed that ordering the gopchang hot pot on its own comes with baeksundae (plain sundae) included. Since we had the hot pot as part of the combo this time, next time I'd like to order the hot pot dish on its own.

Finishing with sesame oil fried rice

You can't come for gopchang and skip the fried rice. The combo set included sesame oil fried rice too.

After working through most of the main dishes, finishing with the fried rice made the dinner feel complete. It was also convenient that rice was already included in the set without needing to order it separately.

Self-serve bar and dessert

Perilla leaves and pickled radish tend to run out fast while eating. Yeonsu Gopchang has a separate self-serve bar where you can grab more side dishes yourself. We went and grabbed extra peppers, garlic, perilla leaves, and pickled radish while eating.

I especially went back for more perilla leaves a few times, because of that perilla + gopchang + garlic combination I mentioned earlier. Not having to call a staff member every time you need something made it really convenient.

There was exactly one thing I regretted that day. Why did I have to drive today of all days... Yeonsu Gopchang has Neurin Maeul makgeolli (rice wine), and apparently it's served with a cute wooden cup when you order it. A wooden cup in that retro setting sounds like it would fit the mood perfectly, right?

I only got to look at it this time, but next time I'll come without a car. My planned combo for next time is already set: grilled makchang + gopchang hot pot + Neurin Maeul makgeolli. In particular, the grilled makchang I saw on the menu comes in four flavors on one plate, which seems perfect for ordering with a group.

After finishing the meal, there was also coffee prepared as dessert.

Adding the restaurant as a KakaoTalk friend also gets you ice cream. Gopchang, then fried rice, then finishing with cool ice cream — that's not something you can just walk past. Haha.

Who this Yeonsu Station restaurant is good for

Having visited in person, Yeonsu Gopchang seemed like a great fit for anyone who wants to enjoy both gopchang and makchang in one sitting. The combo set was generous enough for two people, and the spacious interior looked comfortable for a group of friends too.

The spacious seating area at Yeonsu Gopchang

If you're looking for dinner on the Yeonsu-dong restaurant street, or a spot with a retro vibe for drinks, this one's worth considering. I'm still a little sorry I couldn't drink the makgeolli this time, so next visit I'll leave the car behind. :)
