Seogwipo Korean eatery, grilled tilefish: Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

Today, I visited Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, one of those Jeju places where you can take in beautiful scenery and enjoy a satisfying meal all at once. Let me share my honest thoughts on its sprawling 3,500-pyeong rose garden and grilled tilefish!

As you drive along the road near the Jungmun Tourist Complex, a huge sign comes into view—you can spot it from far away.

The space is so large that parking is no worry at all. It is an especially easy place for newer drivers to park with plenty of room.

The neatly kept restaurant exterior stood out even from a distance. It is generously sized, so it also looked perfectly suited to group gatherings.

A rose garden made for a walk before or after your meal

Looking around the restaurant, I found a nature-friendly scene beneath a banner reading, “A restaurant with a beautiful rose garden.” There is a large garden of about 3,500 pyeong where you can stroll at leisure before or after eating. It was the perfect space to unwind while admiring the many flowers that bloom beautifully each season and the lush green trees. Pretty photo spots are set up throughout, too, so it would be lovely to make memories with a few photos after your meal.^^

Near the entrance, there is a neatly arranged display of Jeju specialties such as Jeju tangerine cookies and makgeolli (Korean rice wine). It was fun to browse a little before or after the meal, and I naturally found myself lingering there. On one side, framed autographs from many celebrities who have visited were also displayed tidily, which raised my expectations even more for this already well-regarded Seogwipo restaurant. 😄

Generous seating and a self-service bar

The open interior came into view at once, and the large dining room felt clean and comfortably maintained! As you would expect from a huge restaurant with up to 480 seats, there was plenty of space between tables for a relaxed, comfortable meal. At this scale, both families traveling together and large tour groups can visit without feeling crowded.

The self-service bar was kept very neat, so I could comfortably help myself to whatever side dishes I needed. 👍

A notice asking guests to take only what they can eat for the environment also said that side dishes are never reused, so we took just small portions of what we could finish. Haha.

There was also a receipt-review event going on, so of course I joined right away. If you upload a photo of the pretty garden, you receive a sweet cookie. You have to do these things! 😆

A full table of king grilled tilefish and abalone stone-pot rice

Once we sat down, the banchan (Korean side dishes) were set out quickly. From crisp braised lotus root and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) to japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), salad, kabocha squash, and macaroni, there was a satisfying selection to enjoy with the main dishes. Nothing was overly seasoned, and everything was clean-tasting, so I kept reaching for it while waiting for the main course. Haha, I went back for more several times before it even arrived!

Perhaps because it was morning, the nutty aroma stopped me in my tracks. Until 12:00, every adult who orders a meal can enjoy a rich abalone porridge packed with abalone innards for free. 👍

We ordered the king grilled tilefish and abalone stone-pot rice. The tilefish arrived beautifully browned and so large it filled the plate, with incredibly thick flesh! ❗️ The stone-pot rice, generously topped with seaweed, abalone, and kabocha squash, was delicious too.^^

Crisp on the outside and moist inside, the fish was easy to pull away from the bones. I placed a big piece of the tender, nicely seasoned tilefish over rice, and its nutty flavor really came alive. It was mild with no fishiness, so I kept reaching for more.^^

The yellowish stone-pot rice, colored by abalone innards, paired chewy abalone beautifully with a rich, nutty flavor. It was tasty on its own, but it was even better wrapped in roasted gim (seaweed) with the abalone rice, a thick piece of tilefish, and a little seasoned sauce. The crisp-outside, moist-inside fish and savory rice worked so well together that I never tired of it until the last bite. 😁

After serving out the rice, I opened the stone pot that had been filled with hot water beforehand and finished the meal with sungnyung (scorched-rice tea). The comforting flavor of the crusted rice had steeped nicely into the broth, making it a refreshing, clean finish. It warmed and soothed my stomach, right through to the end. 👍

When heading to the register after the meal, just take along the wooden spatula on your table. The spatula is engraved with “Please bring this when paying” and serves as the bill. Haha.

There is also a nicely arranged coffee vending-machine corner for a clean finish after eating. I got myself a sweet coffee and wandered around the area a little to help digest the meal.^^

A post-meal garden walk and other menu options

After eating, I stepped outside and the broad garden and annex building came into view at once. The grounds are spacious and well cared for, making them ideal for a light walk after filling up. There are photo spots throughout for taking pictures, and it is also a wonderful space to spend some time slowly taking in the garden as it changes with the seasons. 👍

Along with the king grilled tilefish set we tried this time, the restaurant offers a variety of dishes, including boneless flower mackerel braised with aged kimchi, limited to 30 servings a day, and black pork tonkatsu that children can enjoy. It is a place with a proven reputation and flavor, having been featured on programs such as Live Broadcast Tonight and Saturday Is Good for Rice.

It is just a five-minute drive from the Jungmun Tourist Complex, making it very accessible, while the dedicated parking lot and spacious interior make it ideal for family trips or group visits. If you would like a satisfying Korean meal around Jeju’s Jungmun area, keep it in mind for a visit.
