A black pork restaurant found still dripping wet from Hamdeok Beach

The moment I landed on Jeju, I headed straight for the emerald waters of Hamdeok Beach. Summer in Jeju means swimming, no question, so I had a blast in the water — but after a long swim I got hungry fast. Traveling far while soaked in seawater felt like too much hassle, so I searched for a good restaurant near Hamdeok Beach and ended up at Jeju Samchun, which had a great location and excellent reviews.

It's also perfectly placed for a light stroll along the Seobong olle trail before dinner, or for watching the sunset along the Hamdeok beach path after swimming — really efficient for planning a travel route.

The interior was surprisingly clean and calm for a grilled meat restaurant — bright floors and high ceilings made it feel even more spacious and quiet. The restroom is inside and spacious too, so I changed into dry, comfortable clothes to focus on the meal and sat down.

300-hour low-temperature aging

As a certified Jeju black pork restaurant, they use good, trustworthy Jeju pork aged for 300 hours at low temperature, then smoke it with grapevine wood chips, giving the pork a soft texture and deep flavor.

Partitioned table seating inside Jeju Samchun

The tables are partitioned into separate spaces, which is probably why so many people come here for family gatherings or intimate meals.

There's a deck on the terrace to relax on, and I took a window seat, feeling like I was eating in the front yard of a Jeju house.

The basic side dishes come with salted pollack roe and seaweed

Unusually, the basic side dish spread includes salted pollack roe and seaweed. Just this alone got me excited for how good the meal was going to be.

The basic spread: tangy scallion salad, savory salted pollack roe drizzled with sesame oil, crunchy cucumber salad, breadcrumb salt for dipping the meat, shiitake wasabi, hairtail innard jeot, and anchovy jeot.

The Jocha Set, with a faint hint of grapevine smoke

The Jocha Set arrived, gorgeous to look at and carrying a soft trail of smoke.

As soon as the meat hit the table, a gentle grapevine smoke aroma hit my nose. Thanks to the 300 hours of aging, the grain of the meat looked genuinely moist even to the eye.

A little dolhareubang (stone grandfather statue) figure came out alongside the meat, which really made it hit home that I was in Jeju.

With a staff member grilling it for me, I got completely absorbed watching the meat cook, waiting for it to be ready.

The outside was coated in smoky aroma, savory and firm, while the inside was juicy and chewed very tenderly.

There was no trace of the gamey smell black pork can sometimes have — the more I chewed, the more the umami and depth of low-temperature aged meat spread across my whole mouth.

Dipped in breadcrumb salt, it's like grilled tonkatsu

Dipping it into the crunchy breadcrumb salt gave it a different, delicious twist too. Eaten this way, it tastes like grilled tonkatsu haha.

Grilling aged kimchi took the pork flavor up another level, so I grilled plenty of it.

Dried seaweed lightly toasted on the grill, paired with the roe.

The salted pollack roe has sesame oil mixed in — doubles the savoriness, and wrapped with crisply toasted seaweed, it's absolute paradise. Rice alone with this would be delicious, but wrapping it around black pork is paradise.

Am I eating the seaweed or eating the whole table? Haha. I completely fell for this new seaweed-wrapped black pork today, but of course most people love the classic combo of fresh lettuce, pickled radish, and scallion salad. Jeju Samchun's tangy scallion salad cut through the meat's richness nicely — playing the same role as the seaweed did.
