Couple set at Daepan Sotddukkeong Kimchi Samgyeopsal, a Myeon-mok

In short

Daepan Sotddukkeong Kimchi Samgyeopsal is a kimchi samgyeopsal (pork belly) restaurant in Myeonmok-dong, Jungnang-gu, Seoul, serving pork belly grilled on a sotddukkeong (cauldron-lid griddle). On a weekday evening, a couple set with pork belly, pork neck, cheese, and steamed egg, plus yeolmu kimchi noodles and two bowls of rice, turned out to be so generous the meat was left over, and the free doenjang stew was good enough to warrant ordering extra rice. A solid Myeonmok-dong Korean BBQ pick for both group dinners and family meals.

[Myeonmok] A real pork belly gem in Jungnang-gu, Daepan Sotddukkeong Kimchi Samgyeopsal. Today I went to Daepan Sotddukkeong Kimchi Samgyeopsal, a samgyeopsal spot in Myeonmok-dong. Quick review time.

What's the exterior like?

Here's the exterior. It had such a clean look that I already thought it'd be spotless inside before even walking in.

There was a menu board out front too, so it was easy to check before going in.

You order via kiosk here. Payment is after eating! There were à la carte meat options as well as set menus. Besides that, side dishes like cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), steamed egg, kimchi stew, yeolmu kimchi noodles, water naengmyeon, and spicy naengmyeon were all on offer.

Large menu written on the wall

There was also a big menu written on the wall, so I picked from that first and then ordered at the kiosk.

I ordered the couple set (2 people) (pork belly + pork neck + grilled cheese + steamed egg), 2 bowls of rice, and yeolmu kimchi noodles.

Interior vibe and room seating

The interior had a clean, modern vibe. I visited on a weekday evening and there were so many customers? Watching customers keep streaming in while I ate, I thought, this place really is popular.

There were also room-like separated seats, which seemed great for group dinners or gatherings.

Menu descriptions were posted all around the walls too.

There was also a self-bar set up so you could easily grab whatever was missing. Mushrooms, potatoes, kimchi, bean sprouts, ssamjang (thick soybean-chili dipping sauce), and more were all available, and it was kept tidy and well-stocked, which I loved!!

How does the couple set and side dishes taste?

Today's order: couple set (2 people) (pork belly + pork neck + grilled cheese + steamed egg), 2 bowls of rice, yeolmu kimchi noodles.

Table setting with basic side dishes
Refillable basic side dishes
Grilled scallion kimchi and ssamjang

The basic side dishes! All refillable at the self-bar, and grilling the scallion kimchi was so good! Everything was tasty, but the ssamjang especially was excellent.

Steamed egg included in the couple set
The free makjang stew served with the meal

The steamed egg came with the set, fluffy and packed with a high egg ratio. And that makjang (fermented soybean paste) stew that comes free with the meal, seriously, that stew is legendary... I ordered one bowl of rice but after tasting the stew I ordered another. Spicy, savory, incredible...

A generous portion of yeolmu kimchi noodles

Here's the yeolmu kimchi noodles. This is genuinely great value... the portion is huge. It's basically enough for two, the price is cheap, there's plenty of yeolmu (young radish greens) kimchi in it, and above all it tastes amazing... Next time I want to try the naengmyeon too.

Bean sprouts and kimchi placed on top of the sotddukkeong griddle

The bean sprouts and kimchi were placed right on top of the sotddukkeong (cauldron-lid griddle) with a nice touch. They also added potatoes and mushrooms, explaining everything kindly. The owner was so friendly that I already felt great before even eating, haha.

Thick cuts of pork belly, pork neck, and grilled cheese

The couple set (pork belly + pork neck + grilled cheese). First, they explained that if you put the grilling cheese directly on the pan it'll stick, so you should grill it on top of the potatoes instead. And then the premium hanwoo — er, Boseong Nokdon pork neck and pork belly! The meat was really thick and clearly high quality, can you tell from the photo too, haha.

You grill the meat yourself rather than having staff grill it for you! I wondered if it might be a bit little for two people, but since the meat was fresh and thick, we actually had leftovers, haha. I was planning to order more if it wasn't enough, but that turned out to be totally unnecessary!

Final thoughts

It'd been a while since I had such delicious sotddukkeong samgyeopsal, and it made me so happy. The price is affordable, the meat is delicious, and above all the owner was so kind — I get why the place is packed. It looked great for group dinners and for family gatherings too. I think I'll be back often. Highly recommend Daepan Sotddukkeong Kimchi Samgyeopsal, a Myeonmok-dong samgyeopsal spot.
