Weekday lunch set for two with extra braised mackerel: Min Cook

In short

Min Cook Apbadang Seongsa is a seasonal grilled fish restaurant in Seongsa-dong, Goyang, Gyeonggi. Visiting on a weekday at 1:30pm, the writer ordered the grilled fish lunch set for two (₩31,800) with added braised mackerel and salted fermented oysters, and the plump grilled hairtail paired with the oysters was rice-stealing good. With a self-serve banchan and soup bar included, it was more than enough for two to eat until full.

Signature spread of seasonal grilled fish at Min Cook Apbadang Seongsa

These days my body seems short on omega-3s — I've been craving grilled fish like crazy. There's something about eating fish regularly that just keeps my energy up, you know?

To finally get a proper grilled fish fix, I went to Min Cook Apbadang Seongsa (민쿡앞바당 성사), a seasonal grilled fish restaurant.

I showed up late for lunch, around 1:30pm on a weekday, and the place was still packed!

Is everyone eating lunch late like me these days? Good restaurants really don't care what time it is, haha.

Breaking down the Min Cook Apbadang menu

As soon as I sat down I read through the whole menu. The lineup turned out to be way more varied than I expected!

If you're coming for a family gathering on a special occasion, I'd recommend the 'Apbadang table set (₩70,000 for two)'!

If you bring your parents along, they'll even throw in a takeout pack of seasoned marinated crab. Eek! Bringing your parents and getting seasoned crab as a gift on top of that?! It makes the whole meal feel even more generous.

Full spread of the Apbadang table set

The spread includes seasonal grilled fish, salted fermented oysters, crispy bulgogi, soy-marinated crab, abalone marinated in soy sauce, braised hairtail, buckwheat pancake with cabbage, six seasonal banchan, seasonal soup, two kinds of leafy wraps, salad, and individual sotbap (pot rice) for everyone — the table practically groans under it all.

Yeni's hearty pick: grilled fish lunch set for two, ₩31,800

I ordered the 'grilled fish lunch set for two (₩31,800) + braised mackerel (₩12,000) + salted fermented oysters (₩6,000)'.

Ordering several extras made for a serious amount of food.

Grilled fish lunch set for two with added braised mackerel and salted fermented oysters

The fish portion for two was already plenty, but I hadn't had spicy-sweet braised mackerel in ages and really wanted it. The hairtail that comes standard had wonderfully plump, hearty flesh — picking it apart was such a treat.

Grilled fish is clean and tasty dipped in soy sauce with a bit of wasabi mixed in, but piled on top of the salted fermented oysters I ordered, it was flat-out rice-stealing good!

Adding the salted fermented oysters is highly recommended

The rice comes as sotbap (pot rice) for two, served in one big pot together, and the black beans in it made it even nuttier.

How the banchan and soup self-bar works

The six standard banchan can be freely refilled from the self-bar.

But honestly, the fish alone filled me up so much I never even made it to the self-bar 🤣 The lineup, from seasoned greens to japchae, looked really solid and satisfying though.

For soup, they give you a separate bowl and you ladle out as much as you want yourself at the self-bar, so there's no need to feel awkward about it.

Dessert and lunchbox menu

Dessert corner with sikhye and drinks

After the meal I had sikhye (sweet rice punch) for dessert — it wasn't too sweet and was nice and cold, so I ended up drinking two cups!

Dessert area with an americano machine

There's also an americano machine. In one corner of the restaurant they sell three packs of banchan for ₩10,000, along with sujeonggwa (cinnamon-persimmon punch) and sikhye.

They also sell 'table lunchboxes' that can be ordered for groups.

Options include bulgogi grilled flounder (₩10,900), bulgogi grilled hairtail (₩10,900), and bulgogi grilled mackerel (₩12,900). If you live alone, grilling fish and cleaning up after can be such a hassle, so being able to get a healthy meal for around ₩10,000 is great.
