Incheon sashimi restaurant terrace: Veteran General Fish Market

Today, I visited Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch (베테랑종합어시장 인천구월점), a great-value spot for seasonal sashimi on Rodeo Street in Guwol-dong, Incheon.

As the weather cools down, you naturally start craving seasonal seafood. This is a place regulars keep coming back to for fresh Incheon raw shrimp sashimi, gizzard shad sashimi, and grilled gizzard shad, so I arrived with high expectations.

Exterior in the heart of Guwol-dong Rodeo Street

It is right in the center of Guwol-dong Rodeo Street, so it is very easy to get to.

A spacious interior and terrace for gatherings

There are plenty of tables and the dining room is very spacious, making it perfect for gatherings or company dinners. There is an outdoor terrace, too, and on lovely days like these, the windows are thrown wide open so you can enjoy sashimi with a real outdoor-drinking-stall feel. It is such a nice atmosphere for a drink alongside fresh sashimi in the cool breeze.

Medium raw shrimp sashimi: menu and price

Looking over the menu, the individual sashimi prices were great, and the sets with fried dishes and sushi were excellent value as well. It is also known as a spot for cool mulhoe (cold raw-fish soup) in hot weather, but we came today to properly enjoy seafood at its seasonal peak.

In autumn, so many people come here for Incheon salt-grilled shrimp, raw shrimp sashimi, and grilled gizzard shad.

Self-service bar sides and crisp kimchi pancakes

The basic side dishes were neatly served, including salted pollock roe, salad, and aged kimchi.

It was convenient to help ourselves to more side dishes from the self-service bar without feeling awkward about it.

And one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back to Veteran General Fish Market is its self-serve kimchi pancake!

A small tip for a delicious kimchi pancake

If you pile on too much batter, it becomes thick and loses its crispness. Scoop just one ladleful and spread it thin and wide in the pan, and you get the kimchi pancake of your dreams: crisp, with flavor bursting through. It is the perfect appetite-opener before the sashimi arrives.

Prepared raw shrimp sashimi and butter-grilled heads

At last, the raw shrimp sashimi we had been waiting for arrived! It came neatly prepared, so we could enjoy it easily without peeling anything by hand. Best of all, butter-grilled shrimp heads were included on the same platter at no additional charge, which was such a delight. Perhaps because they were in season, the shrimp flesh was plump, chewy with every bite, and increasingly sweet. I immediately understood why everyone calls this their lifetime-best raw shrimp sashimi spot.

The shrimp heads, richly grilled in butter, combined a wonderful buttery aroma with crispness. The nutty flavor and savoriness were so good that I could not help saying it was crazy. You could not ask for a better drinking snack.
