On a day with a free block between classes, before heading to a café to study, I went to Suraok Sundaeguk Juan Station Branch (수라옥순대국 주안역점) near Juan Station to fill up properly first. It's a comfortable place to eat alone, and for just ₩4,000 you can upgrade to a set meal, so I had a thoroughly satisfying meal.
What's the atmosphere like at Suraok Sundaeguk Juan Station Branch?

The moment I stepped inside, I thought the interior was remarkably neat and pleasant for a sundae soup (Korean blood sausage soup) place. Warm rattan lamps hang as the interior's accent, so the whole place felt cozy.

Every table has a tablet ordering kiosk, so you can browse the menu at your own pace and go from ordering to payment with ease. The tables are spaced wide and generously, so I didn't feel self-conscious dropping in alone to eat during my break between classes.

The menu is written up big on the wall too. Prices were in the ₩10,000-and-up range.

The basic side dishes — crunchy onion, green chili, chives, sweet-and-sour kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), saeujeot (salted shrimp) and ssamjang (soybean-chili dipping paste) — came in neat golden brass bowls. It matched the concept of a king's royal table (sura).

What comes with the ₩4,000 set meal?
The set plate you get for an extra ₩4,000 comes generously loaded with glossy traditional sundae, tender suyuk (boiled pork slices) and nutty liver.
When I picked up the traditional sundae with my chopsticks, it was firmly packed full of glass noodles and vegetables. Take a bite and the casing is chewy while the inside spreads with nuttiness and savory depth.

The suyuk was tender lean meat with the grain still visible, not dry at all, and it chewed soft and springy with zero gamey smell. The liver wasn't dry either — light and clean — and dipped lightly in saeujeot it had a clean nuttiness that left me satisfied.
Using the self-serve side dish station
On one side of the restaurant there's a tidy 'self-serve side dish station', and the neatly stacked small plates, rice bowls and seasoning containers looked hygienic, which I liked.

Beyond the sides served by default, you can freely help yourself to as much onion, cheongyang chili, kkakdugi, chives and so on as you want without feeling self-conscious, so I took a moderate amount.
Spicy special gopchang sundae soup and the full set spread
The spicy special gopchang sundae soup I ordered and the ₩4,000 add-on set filled the whole table. The gukbap (soup with rice), the plate of suyuk and the sides in neat brass bowls come together as a set, and it feels upscale!

They kindly brought an apron too.
How the bubbling spicy special gopchang sundae soup tastes
The broth came out boiling hard in the ttukbaegi (earthenware pot), and it was packed with fillings. The portion was so generous that chewy, plump special gopchang (intestine), sundae and chunks of meat kept coming up endlessly.
The gopchang filled me right up. One sip of the broth and there was a sharp, peppery kick grazing the tip of my tongue. I seasoned it a bit more with saeujeot and it was exactly to my taste — perfect!

How to eat gukbap the right way
To enjoy the gukbap properly, I put the rice that comes with it into the broth, piled the chewy gopchang and tender meat high on a spoonful of rice and took one big bite. The peppery broth was excellent, and the fillings were seriously substantial — loved it.

There's a lot more inside than it looks. It was the perfect place to warm up and fill up. For anyone near Juan Station looking for proper gukbap and a hearty sundae set, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

The ₩4,000 set changed again once it went into the broth. Whether dipped plain in seasoned sesame oil or ssamjang, or soaked moist in the hot broth, both ways tasted excellent.

Before it goes into the broth, the suyuk lets you feel the tender, clean grain of the meat itself, but once it soaks up the hot spicy broth, the nutty fat and the heat come together beautifully!

A full blessing of gopchang and suyuk.

The set-meal upgrade for just ₩4,000 isn't optional — it's a must! I recommend piling the set's suyuk and traditional sundae generously into the ttukbaegi, seasoning to taste with saeujeot for that savory depth, and taking a big spoonful. The combination of the meat's tenderness, the sundae's moistness and the hearty fillings that keep coming until the very last bite is one I think I'll remember for a long time. If you want to feel the happiness of a proper 'wanttuk' (emptying the whole pot) near Juan Station, be sure to visit Suraok Sundaeguk Juan Station Branch!
