During my trip to Jeju, I wanted something different from black pork, braised cutlassfish, or pork noodle soup, so I went to Dixie's (딕시스). This Southern American restaurant near Dongmun Market was easy to fit into my travel route.

Where is Dixie's, and what is it like inside?

The address is 24 Gwandek-ro 8-gil, Jeju-si, Jeju, South Korea. Rather than the stone walls or Jeju-style cafés I had seen elsewhere, it had a casual atmosphere that brought the American South to mind.

The original post lists its hours as 11:30 AM to 10 PM, with a break from 3 PM to 4:30 PM, and says it is regularly closed on Tuesdays.

Inside, the American bar-like atmosphere continued. There were bar seats as well as tables for two and four, and I thought it would suit a meal with friends during a trip or a date.

The kitchen area also reminded me of a casual American diner. I liked that the same atmosphere carried through the space, not just the food.

Cups, plates, and utensils were arranged to one side. Since I could take what I needed myself, it was convenient not having to wait for staff.

Which rice bowls did I order?

They also serve burgers, but I was drawn to the rice bowls topped with various ingredients. They looked filling enough for a meal, so I chose the Cajun shrimp rice bowl and the fried chicken rice bowl.

What did the fried chicken rice bowl taste like?

At first, I did not expect much from a dish with chicken over rice. Once I tried it, though, the chicken stayed with me more than the rice.

The coating was crisp, while the chicken inside was moist and tender. The coating was neither too thick nor greasy, so I could taste the chicken’s juices and mild flavor.

Chicken on its own could have felt heavy, but having it with the rice and toppings made the meal lighter and more filling.

How did the Cajun shrimp rice bowl smell and feel?

The Cajun shrimp rice bowl combined garlic rice with large shrimp, vegetables, several toppings, and sauce.

The shrimp were plump, springy, and chewy. The Cajun seasoning had soaked in well, giving them a flavor different from the soy sauce or chili sauce shrimp I usually eat.

The chopped cilantro was especially memorable. Its fragrant, slightly sharp aroma worked with the Cajun seasoning. A fresh finish lingered after the shrimp’s rich flavor, making it a combination cilantro lovers might appreciate.

The springy shrimp, cilantro, Cajun seasoning, and nutty garlic rice went well together. It was one of the more unusual flavors I remembered from this Jeju trip.

Unlike sticky rice that clumps together, the rice grains were fluffy and separate. That texture also worked well with the spices.

What kind of meal is this good for?

It suited a time when I wanted to try a Southern American-style meal near Dongmun Market. From the two bowls I tried, I especially remembered the chicken’s crispness and the shrimp’s spiced flavor. I think I would remember it again when I wanted a different kind of meal with friends or a partner in a casual space.
