Jeju grilled fish restaurant with ocean views: Hwadeogeuro Gan

In short

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Jeju Iho Tewoo Branch is a grilled-fish restaurant by Iho Tewoo Beach in Jeju. We ordered grilled mackerel and atka mackerel set meals, enjoyed the ocean-view seating, and helped ourselves at the generously stocked self-serve bar. Verdict: a savory, light meal my daughter and I finished completely.

Not long ago, my daughter said she was really craving grilled fish. Honestly, it is hard to eat fish often at home because of the smell, right? Just as I was wondering about a newly opened, truly delicious and neatly presented Jeju grilled-fish spot right in front of Iho Tewoo Beach, I went straight over haha.

When I visited Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Jeju Iho Tewoo Branch (화덕으로간고등어반상 제주이호테우점), it was even better than I expected. It is a place where you can enjoy neatly prepared wood-fired grilled fish while looking directly out at the sea ^^

It is only about a 10-minute drive from Jeju Airport, so access is excellent. Since it is right in front of the shore, it is also such a great place to visit while traveling.

When we actually arrived in front of the restaurant, the wide-open ocean view filled our eyes and made me feel so refreshed. Hours are 10:00 to 22:00, and it is regularly closed every Wednesday. The fact that it operates without a break time is also such a major plus for travelers!!

Spacious interior and Korean self-serve bar

Once inside, an even larger and more pleasant space than expected opened up before us. Being able to dine while looking at the blue sea from a window seat is another big advantage.

You can even see the large fish-grilling oven in the kitchen haha.

A neatly stocked Korean self-serve bar

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang runs a neat, generously stocked self-serve bar with basic side dishes, freshly cooked rice, and even fried eggs you can make yourself.

Jellyfish salad, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), lotus-root salad, potato pancakes, and sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) too! Just the side dishes at the self-serve bar looked enough to finish a whole bowl of rice in no time.

And I was already grateful that we could fry our own eggs, but I was honestly so surprised to find olive oil instead of regular cooking oil!!

Every neatly arranged side dish was so clean and tasty that we cleared them all out before the main dishes even arrived ^^;;

A varied selection of Jeju grilled-fish dishes

Looking over the menu, I saw not only grilled fish but also spicy fish roe stew, spicy pork set meals, and house-made tteokgalbi (Korean grilled short-rib patties) set meals, so even people who do not like fish can dine comfortably! The grilled-fish set meals range from spicy options to regular grilled dishes, with many kinds of fish including mackerel, atka mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and hairtail, so I had such a hard time deciding haha.

There are also a children’s mackerel set meal and a tteokgalbi set meal, plus extra portions of fish such as mackerel or atka mackerel, so you can really feel the thoughtful consideration for different customers. I wonder if this may be the only Jeju grilled-fish specialty restaurant where you can try such a variety of fish.

Fresh vegetables grown on land, good salt, a 500-degree wood-fired oven and good fish, plus good rice prepared with care for every meal!

Mackerel and atka mackerel sets grilled in a wood-fired oven

The grilled-fish set meals, freshly cooked in the wood-fired oven, surprised me with how neatly presented they were the moment they arrived! Each came cleanly arranged as an individual set meal.

Neatly prepared homemade-style side dishes, soybean-sprout soup, chewy multigrain rice, and freshly grilled fish!

Thanks to the wood-fired oven, the excess oil was cooked right out, and the nutty flavor was seriously amazing! It looks so delicious just from the photos, right? haha

I put a piece of grilled mackerel on top of my rice, and it was the first time I realized mackerel could be this delicious haha.

The second it went into my mouth, it was so wonderfully nutty. My daughter said it was on a completely different level from what she eats at home haha. There was not even a trace of fishiness, and the flesh was thick without being dry—so delicious!

Each side dish was lightly seasoned and so delicious, with absolutely no artificial seasoning taste.

The grilled atka mackerel had deeper, softer flesh than the mackerel, with a mild yet stronger nutty flavor, so I thought children would really enjoy it too.

Soft, mild grilled atka mackerel

Dip it in the soy sauce and it tastes just like the fish at an izakaya, haha. Vegetables topped with rice and kimchi, then a thick piece of atka mackerel! Really, I have been to grilled-fish restaurants in Jeju, but this was the first time the fish had ever tasted this good.

My daughter also kept saying it was so delicious haha. She said she really wanted to come back next time, and she ate every last bit of fish without leaving a single piece ^^

Jeju grilled fish that is great for families

Grilled-fish restaurant suited to family meals

After finishing our meal, I understood why Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang is recommended as a great restaurant to visit with family.

Spacious, pleasant restaurant for family visits

I felt that this is a place with not only great flavor but also the comfort of the space itself. The spacious tables, relaxed atmosphere, and healthy, neatly prepared flavors made with good ingredients had me thinking I should bring my parents here next time.

If you are looking for a great Jeju grilled-fish restaurant, I do not think there is a place quite like Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang. If you stop by Iho Tewoo Beach and need a satisfying restaurant, do not hesitate to visit.
