Suwon Station group dining: kalguksu and seafood pancake, Daseon

In short

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant at the end of Suwon Station Rodeo Street in Suwon, Gyeonggi. A group of 9 shared the kalguksu set meal, bossam (boiled pork), half kimchi and half meat dumplings, and seafood pancake, and every dish arrived quickly with no waiting. The generous, clean-tasting clam broth noodles and the crisp seafood pancake made Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch a solid pick for a group meal.

With the weather getting chilly these days, I keep craving warm soup dishes, you know? Not long ago I had a group get-together near Haenggung-dong. We were chatting away at a café and debating where to go for dinner, and I suggested Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch's Suwon Station location, a place I'd wanted to try for a while.

Here's my honest, paid-with-my-own-money review of eating really well as a group at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch! 🤑 (I did receive an experience deal, but I paid close to ₩200,000 or more haha)

How to reach Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch from Suwon Station Exit 8

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, also a good spot for a Suwon date, sits at the end of Suwon Station Rodeo Street. Walk over 500m from Exit 8 of Suwon Station and you'll find it. Parking is a bit tough, so I'd recommend taking public transit.

They apparently don't have a break time on weekends, so that's worth keeping in mind before you go. We visited on a Sunday evening and it was still packed with customers.

True to its reputation as a top kalguksu spot near Suwon Station, the popularity was intense. We barely managed to snag a table...

What is on the menu, plus barley rice before the meal

The menu at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch was really diverse, as you'd expect from a kalguksu specialist.

Menu selection at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch

From basic kalguksu to their signature kal-nakjji (noodle soup with octopus) and manda kalguksu, there were all kinds of options. Since we came as a group, we ordered a variety — kalguksu set meal, pancake, and dumplings — to share.

Barley rice with sesame oil and chojang before the meal

First out was the barley rice served before the meal, and it was a real treat! Mixing it up with sesame oil and chojang (vinegar-chili sauce) really woke up my appetite. ✌️ It was perfect for lightly settling the stomach before the main dishes arrived. I personally love barley rice, so this little touch really won me over.

The kalguksu set meal with bossam and half-and-half dumplings

Bossam served with the kalguksu set meal
A plate of tender bossam

We ordered the kalguksu set meal, which came with a small serving of bossam (boiled pork wraps). The portion wasn't overwhelming, so it paired well with the noodles. If you love meat, I'd recommend ordering a separate plate of suyuk (boiled pork slices) too. The lean-to-fat ratio was just right, making it really soft and moist. It melted in my mouth in a way that kept me reaching for more.

Half kimchi and half meat dumplings

We also ordered dumplings, half kimchi and half meat. The wrapper thickness was just right and the filling was packed in — genuinely delicious. Eating them alongside the kalguksu made the meal feel filling and satisfying. The kimchi dumplings in particular had a slight spicy kick with great savory depth, which was totally my type.

Chewy noodles, clean clam broth and crisp seafood pancake

Kalguksu topped with clams and chives

Finally, the main kalguksu arrived, and the portion was enormous. It was loaded with clams and topped nicely with chives and gim (dried seaweed) flakes. Just the look of it got my mouth watering. Even the two guys in our group commented on how huge the portion was, haha.

The noodles were on the thicker side, so I worried the broth flavor might not soak in well, but that wasn't the case at all! The chewy noodles picked up the broth flavor perfectly, and it was genuinely delicious. Overall it wasn't salty or overpowering, which I appreciated. Having such a clean, refreshing kalguksu after a while felt like it really hit the spot. Topping it with the tasty kimchi made the noodles disappear fast. Even writing this now, I'm craving it again. 🫢

Crispy seafood pancake

We also ordered seafood pancake, and it was pure art — crispy outside, moist inside. It was generously loaded with seafood too. The combo of kalguksu and seafood pancake needs no explanation, it's simply fantastic! Every single dish we tried was delicious, making for a truly satisfying meal.

Is Daseon Kalguksu fast enough for a group of 9?

We visited Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch as a group of 9 and ordered a lot of dishes. I honestly worried the food might take a while to come out, but everything arrived really quickly, one after another. The chef's hands must be seriously fast. It was great being able to enjoy delicious food without waiting, even as a large group.

Getting to try such a wide range of dishes — the kalguksu set meal, bossam, half-and-half dumplings, and seafood pancake — made the meal even better. If you're looking for a spot for a group gathering near Suwon Station, or searching for a good lunch place in Suwon, Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch would be a great choice. I'd love to come back next time I'm near Suwon Station. It was a delicious meal! 🩵
