Kalguksu restaurant date for two, extra-large set with dumplings

When you're looking for a date spot in Suwon, there are plenty of trendy cafés and well-known restaurants, but sometimes it's nice to have a warm meal at an old-school place and just talk comfortably.

This time I visited Daseon Kalguksu, a spot with real old-timer's-restaurant vibes near Suwon Station. It has a different kind of charm from the flashier, more polished restaurants, with kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), dumplings, boiled pork, and seafood pajeon (savory pancake) all on offer — I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a Suwon date restaurant.

It's especially good for ordering a few dishes and sharing, so it works well with friends, but it also suited a date where two of us tried a bit of everything.

An exterior with real old-timer's-restaurant charm near Suwon Station

Even before stepping into Daseon Kalguksu, I could feel that warm, familiar atmosphere unique to old-school restaurants. A lot of new restaurants these days go for sleek, stylish interiors, but Daseon Kalguksu had the opposite — the cozy, unpretentious feel of a true old-timer's spot near Suwon Station, and that was part of the charm.

It felt like a place that had been doing business in the same spot for a long time, which naturally raised my expectations for the food. If you're on a date around Suwon Station and want something comfortable and delicious rather than a formal meal, this is a great atmosphere to visit.

Inside, the same cozy old-timer's feel

Walking inside, the atmosphere from outside carries right through. It's kept clean and tidy while still having that warm, old-timer's feel, so it was an easy, unpretentious place to eat.

I think the upside of a place with this kind of vibe is that it works for anything — eating alone, a family meal, or hanging out with friends. This time I ordered a bunch of different dishes and shared them one by one, and because there was so much variety, we naturally ended up talking a lot while eating. So personally, if you're planning a Suwon date at a restaurant, I think a cozy spot like this is a great option.

The menu centers on daseon kal-nakji (knife-cut noodles with octopus) and kalguksu, alongside dumplings, pajeon, boiled pork, and other dishes that pair well with drinks.

Every table already had pepper, chojang (vinegar-chili sauce), cups, and plates set out, so there was no need to get up mid-meal for anything.

Basic side dishes: barley rice, fresh kimchi, and radish salad

Here's the barley rice, fresh kimchi (geotjeori), and radish salad (musaengchae) that come as standard.

It was so nice that they give you barley rice per person without even having to order it separately.

The fresh kimchi in particular was crunchy and delicious.

What we ordered for two

This time we ordered the extra-large kalguksu set meal, kimchi dumplings, meat dumplings, and seafood pajeon.

The kalguksu set meal comes with both kalguksu and boiled pork, so it made for a satisfying, filling meal on its own. Add kimchi dumplings, meat dumplings, and seafood pajeon on top of that, and the table ended up looking pretty lavish.

We visited as a couple but wanted to try a bunch of different things, so we ordered widely — and sharing several dishes in small portions turned out to feel much more abundant than just ordering one thing each.

Extra-large kalguksu set meal

The first dish I want to introduce is the extra-large kalguksu set meal. It comes with both kalguksu and boiled pork, so it's a great fit for anyone who'd feel it's a shame to eat only kalguksu.

Ordering the extra-large size meant a generous amount of noodles, which was great when I wanted a hearty meal.

Eating the noodles with the hot broth felt really comforting, and with the boiled pork on the side, it was plenty for a full meal.

The biggest strength of the kalguksu set meal was being able to enjoy the warm broth and chewy noodles alongside the clean-tasting boiled pork. The boiled pork also came in just the right amount, which was even better, and it tasted great too! We ate it with salted shrimp, soy sauce, and other condiments, and it was even better paired with kimchi.

Kimchi dumplings and meat dumplings

The dumplings we ordered alongside the kalguksu shouldn't be overlooked either. We got kimchi dumplings and meat dumplings separately and compared the two flavors, which made for a fun way to pick based on preference.

I'd recommend the meat dumplings to anyone who prefers a cleaner, nuttier dumpling.

The kimchi dumplings suit anyone who likes that distinctive savory, spicy kick of kimchi. If two of you are visiting, ordering both kinds and splitting them rather than sticking to just one type isn't a bad idea at all.

Seafood pajeon on the side, too

And when you're at a kalguksu restaurant, seafood pajeon is one dish you don't want to skip.

This time we ordered the seafood pajeon too, and adding it made the table so much more plentiful than just kalguksu and dumplings alone. If you're visiting with a group, it's a great dish to order as a side and share.

With kalguksu, dumplings, and seafood pajeon all laid out together, that particular abundant, easygoing feeling of eating at an old-timer's restaurant really came through.
