Songpa Korean barbecue dinner near Seokchon Lake: Sutbul Seonghwa

In short

Sutbul Seonghwa is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Songpa, Seoul, near Seokchon Station and Seokchon Lake. On a day off, I had the Seonghwa Assorted Set and spicy Korean beef hangover ramen, with the well-marbled sirloin and chewy wine-marinated intercostal meat standing out. Verdict: a satisfying choice for dates, small gatherings, or a special dinner.

I spend a lot of time around Songridan-gil, and there was one place whose upscale exterior always caught my eye whenever I passed by. At first, I wondered, “What do they sell here?” so I kept noticing it once or twice as I walked past. I even stopped to look over the menu out of curiosity, haha.

Then this time, I took a day off and decided to have delicious food from lunch through dinner while properly resting for the day. There were several contenders, but I decided on dinner at Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화), the place that had kept catching my eye! It was every bit as good as I had hoped.

Sutbul Seonghwa is located between Exit 1 of Seokchon Station and Exit 2 of Jamsil Station. It is close to Seokchon Lake and right at the entrance to Songridan-gil, so it is in such a great spot for dinner after a date in Jamsil.

Sutbul Seonghwa is also a Michelin Guide-selected restaurant. I have rarely regretted visiting a Michelin Guide pick, so my expectations were really high this time too—and it definitely did not disappoint! Completely satisfied, haha.

Soft lighting, a spacious dining room, and private rooms

The restaurant is spacious and has plenty of tables. Even though we visited at 8 p.m. on a Monday, there were so many guests that we had to wait... in a place this large! I thought it would be quiet since it was Monday evening and an awkward time, so I was genuinely surprised by the crowd. You could really feel that this was a popular restaurant doing very well.

So I could not take photos of the dining room while it was busy; I hurried to take them later, after guests gradually left and the empty tables had been cleared, haha.

The lighting was soft and the atmosphere felt upscale, so it looked like a great place for dinner after a Seokchon Lake date or for a company dinner. Another table was actually having a pre-wedding family meeting, and it made me think it would be just right for a small gathering like that too.

Sutbul Seonghwa also has private rooms. They can accommodate from 5 to 18 people, and a full rental can host up to 64 people. On the day we visited, there were foreign guests and event staff as well. They were dining and holding an event in a room, so it seemed like the restaurant is often used for group gatherings and events too.

I could also see an aging refrigerator on one side of the restaurant where the meat was being aged, and it gave me a sense of their pride in the meat.

Sutbul Seonghwa was selected as one of Suntory Highball Master 100. There is a varied selection of drinks, so I think people who enjoy good drinks alongside good meat will find their meal even more satisfying here.

They were also running a Suntory marble event. The prizes are seriously generous—wow.

Ordering the Seonghwa Assorted Set and spicy Korean beef hangover ramen

We ordered the Seonghwa Assorted Set (Seonghwa sirloin + wine-marinated intercostal meat, 400g) and spicy Korean beef hangover ramen.

Sutbul Seonghwa also sells a lunch menu on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The lunch menu seems reasonably priced too, so I imagine Jamsil office workers and nearby residents stop by often for lunch.

A Naver review event is running as well. You get one highball for participating, so I recommend keeping that in mind and joining in if you visit!

The savory, juicy Seonghwa sirloin

Table setting at Sutbul Seonghwa

I ordered Zero Coke again today. I loved that it came with a chilled glass full of ice.

Iced glass and Zero Coke

A wide variety of neat, well-presented banchan (Korean side dishes) arrived that went nicely with the meat: shredded radish salad, minari (water celery) salad, scallion salad, white kimchi, myeongi namul (pickled wild garlic leaves), shiitake mushroom wasabi, pickled celery, and pickled onion. There were also four dipping sauces, which was great for choosing according to your taste.

They set up high-quality charcoal. The Seonghwa Assorted Set meat was in excellent condition. It looked fresh at a glance, and even the marbling was on another level! Before it even hit the grill, I was so excited to taste it.

When the staff member placed the meat on the grill, the glorious look of the Seonghwa sirloin nearly knocked me over. Seonghwa sirloin is sliced sirloin designed to bring together the savory flavor from rich marbling and the aroma of binchotan charcoal beautifully.

They thoughtfully topped the button mushrooms with butter. Just what you would expect from a standout Jamsil beef restaurant.

We moved the perfectly grilled Seonghwa sirloin to one side of the grill and tucked in!

The marbling that had looked exceptional before grilling delivered exactly the flavor I had hoped for. It was savory and packed with juices, practically melting in my mouth. It was so delicious that the two of us finished it in no time at all...

Juicy grilled beef

The grilled beef was delicious even with just salt, but there were so many side dishes that I tried it topped with all sorts of things too, haha.

At Sutbul Seonghwa, a staff member grills the first serving, and then you grill the rest yourself. I watched carefully as they grilled the meat and tried to copy them as closely as possible when it was our turn, haha.

Wine-marinated intercostal meat and rich hangover ramen

The photo below shows the wine-marinated intercostal meat. It is a chewy cut tossed to order in a special wine marinade. The seasoning was not too strong—just right—and the wine marinade brought out the meat’s flavor even more.

Grilled wine-marinated intercostal meat

The nicely grilled intercostal meat was chewy and juicy, with an outstanding savory flavor that grew with every bite. Needless to say, we enjoyed this cut tremendously too.

Spicy Korean beef hangover ramen

I ordered the spicy Korean beef hangover ramen because I really wanted soup, and the broth was seriously rich and delicious. It was topped generously with beef, so I got to enjoy the little luxury of having ramen with beef, haha.

I also stole a little of the bowl of rice my friend ordered to have with the meat and mixed it into the broth, haha. That says it all... It is an amazing side dish...

Dessert ice cream

Ice cream comes out for dessert. The Excellent ice cream was delicious—it had been a while! A course that was perfect right through dessert~

I enjoyed high-quality beef in an upscale atmosphere, and the staff were kind too, so it was an overall satisfying meal, haha. It would be great for an everyday dinner, but also for a special day or anniversary. I think it would be a nice choice for anyone looking for a blind-date venue too, haha.
