Sokcho sashimi takeout: thick yellowtail at Jinmi Hwareo Center

In short

Jinmi Hwareo Center is a sashimi shop in the basement of Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. I took a small yellowtail back to my accommodation and enjoyed its thick-cut, pleasantly chewy, nutty-tasting slices; the route down to the basement may be confusing on a first visit.

After looking around the market on my Sokcho trip, I wanted an easy dinner back at my accommodation. This time, I got sashimi to go from Jinmi Hwareo Center (진미활어센터) inside Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market.

I chose yellowtail. I took one small fish back with me, and it was nice to eat it slowly at my accommodation without being rushed for time.

Where is Jinmi Hwareo Center in Sokcho Jungang Market?

Jinmi Hwareo Center is in the basement of Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market. It was an easy route for picking up sashimi while browsing the food stalls at Sokcho Jungang Market.

However, the way down to the basement can be a little confusing on a first visit. I went farther inside the market and headed down to the basement seafood section. Once downstairs, the row of sashimi shops gave it a fish-market atmosphere.

Which fish did I choose, and how was it prepared?

There were several fish in the tanks, so I could look at them and choose one myself. I also saw seafood including squid, with both wild-caught and farmed options available.

This time, I wanted something other than flounder, so I asked which fish was in season. Yellowtail caught my eye among the recommendations, so I decided to take it out. Once I ordered, they took one yellowtail from the tank and prepared it right away.

Was the packaging good for taking back to my accommodation?

Seeing it prepared and packed in front of me made it feel fresher. Since I had to carry it back to my accommodation, I also checked the packaging.

It was carefully packed for carrying, and they included an ice pack. Thanks to that, I could bring it back to my accommodation comfortably.

Are there seats for eating in besides takeout?

There were quite a few seats inside where people could eat. I got takeout, but it was also a place where you could dine in.

As I left with my sashimi, the space I looked around gave me the impression that it was kept clean.

Did the takeout include sauces to eat at my accommodation?

When I opened the package at my accommodation, the sashimi was neatly arranged. They had also included soy sauce, chojang (sweet-and-tangy chili dipping sauce), and wasabi, so it was easy to set everything on the table and eat.

After washing up and changing into comfortable clothes, I ate dinner slowly. It saved me the trouble of putting together a separate meal while traveling, so I was glad I had brought it back.

How thick was the yellowtail sashimi, and how did it taste?

Yellowtail was not a fish I was familiar with, but it was better than I expected from the first bite. It was sliced to a good thickness rather than too thin, so I could really feel the texture when chewing.

When I tried it, it was pleasantly chewy with a nutty flavor, so I kept reaching for more.

Perhaps because I had watched it being taken from the tank and prepared right away, it felt fresh when I ate it too. The things I remember most from this takeout were the yellowtail's thick slices and springy texture.

This dinner of one small yellowtail taken back to my accommodation was satisfying. Its nutty flavor stayed with me, and I wanted to go back for yellowtail again.
