Today I'm writing about a visit to Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong, a good spot when you want a hearty meal in Ulsan. The visual of the stone jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) topped with a whole squid was so striking that I went in with high expectations — and it really did deliver, with generous portions and satisfying sides too.

Inside Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong: dining room and self-serve rice bar

The exterior of Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong has a big sign that's easy to spot from far away. The white-toned building has "Daewangam Dol Jjamppong" written in large letters, so I don't think first-timers would have trouble finding it.

Inside, the space was bright and clean, and the tables weren't cramped together. It felt more suited to visiting with two or more people to share one stone jjamppong and add on some side dishes, rather than eating alone.

On one side there was a self-serve bar with pickled radish, onion and black bean sauce, plus free rice, which I liked. I appreciated being able to mix rice into the leftover broth after finishing the jjamppong.

Whole-squid stone jjamppong for 2: how it tastes and how big it is

We ordered the medium whole-squid stone jjamppong for 2, along with fried mandu, handmade pork cutlet and a drink as sides. As soon as the food arrived, the whole squid was the first thing that caught the eye.

The spicy jjamppong, noodles and seafood came piled generously on a stone plate, and it looked amazing from the start. The broth sat shallow at the bottom, and the noodles were well coated in the seasoning.

The spice level wasn't overwhelmingly strong — more like a hot and tangy kick that kept me coming back for more. With squid, shrimp and other seafood mixed in, the chewy texture was great, and the noodles matched the seasoning well. Biting into onion and seafood together brought out a savory depth, and at the end, it would've gone well mixed lightly with rice too.

Fried mandu and the handmade pork cutlet

The fried mandu (dumplings) came out with a crispy exterior, pairing well with the jjamppong. A bite of jjamppong followed by a bite of mandu balanced the spiciness and savoriness perfectly.

The handmade pork cutlet came with the sauce served separately for dipping, and the crispy batter with tender meat texture was solid. It was a good side to add when jjamppong alone wasn't quite enough.

What was good and what fell short at Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong

What I liked was, first of all, that parking was easy and the restaurant was spacious, so visiting felt hassle-free. And the whole-squid stone jjamppong looked great and was generous enough for two people.

Having the self-serve bar and rice available was also satisfying. Being able to add rice when broth was left over made for a hearty way to finish the meal.

If I had to pick a downside, the stone jjamppong portion is already generous, so ordering sides on top of it can leave you fuller than expected. If you want to try several menu items, it's better to adjust your order according to the number of people.
