Gyeongju fruit mochi shop right at opening, four flavors: Tareudang
In short
Tareudang is a fruit mochi and fruit sando takeout shop on the main street of Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. On a family trip, the writer arrived at the 11:00 opening and took away four kinds — mango yogurt 7,500 won, peach yogurt 7,000 won, pineapple 5,500 won and gold kiwi 5,500 won — each bigger than a fist with a whole piece of fresh fruit inside. If you want a specific flavor at Tareudang, arriving at opening time is the surest way to get it.

From peach yogurt and mango yogurt to gold kiwi and pineapple — this is officially a must-try fruit mochi spot on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju.
While looking for dessert on Hwangnidang-gil during a family trip to Gyeongju, I got takeout from Tareudang, famous for its fruit mochi. My parents loved it too — the rice cake skin is thin and chewy, and the fruit content is so generous that a whole piece of fruit fits inside. Officially a Gyeongju dessert spot worth the trip.

I picked up Hwangnam mochi from Tareudang, a Hwangnidang-gil dessert favorite famous for fruit rice cakes. It's right on the main street of Hwangnidang-gil, so it's easy to find.
The popular flavors sell out so fast that this fruit sando and fruit mochi shop is a real hot spot on Hwangnidang-gil, so we made sure to arrive right at opening time!

Does going at opening time mean no wait and full flavor choice?
Arriving right at opening, there was no wait at all. But if you visit during the lunch rush, some Hwangnam mochi flavors are already sold out ㅠㅠㅠ If there's a flavor you want, I really recommend rushing over early!

Even the standing sign outside shows rice cakes stuffed full of fruit. I never managed to try the currently trending Hanjeongseon rice cakes because the line was too long, but Tareudang's fruit mochi is just as high quality, so I really recommend trying the fruit mochi here!

There was a steady stream of customers picking up takeout. Luckily, since we came early, every flavor we wanted was still there. If you're planning a trip to Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, I recommend giving Tareudang a visit at least once.

Tareudang's fruit mochi prices and the four flavors I picked
I ordered the popular flavors: mango yogurt ₩7,500, peach yogurt ₩7,000, pineapple ₩5,500, and gold kiwi ₩5,500. Not exactly cheap, but once you see the size of the Hwangnam mochi, the price feels worth it. It's bigger than a fist.

They pack it up for you right away as soon as you order. You can also get it packed separately in a cooler bag, so if you're buying to take back up to Seoul, I'd recommend adding the cooler bag! The owner was also very kind.

I was surprised by how big the fruit rice cakes were — bigger than I expected. This place is definitely going to get even more famous as a Hwangnidang-gil dessert café!

Opening the mochi at a nearby café
We rushed off with our fruit mochi in hand into a nearby café! We originally planned to eat them back at our accommodation, but we were too curious and dug in right away. Any leftover mochi can be frozen and thawed naturally before eating.

First of all, the fruit mochi really is huge. The ₩7,000-range mochi in particular was so heavy and hefty it could pass for a weapon. Hard to even hold and eat with one hand.

Seriously hard to hold with one hand!

The signature mango yogurt mochi
The first one we tried was Tareudang's signature mango yogurt mochi. A whole fresh mango goes in, no cutting corners. The mochi skin was also really thin, so it didn't stick to my teeth, and the soft, pillowy texture made it genuinely delicious.

The mango juice burst out right away, and the yogurt-mango combo worked really well together. Even my dad, who's not into desserts, said it was delicious and finished it on the spot.

The surprise favorites: gold kiwi and pineapple
The one that turned out to be surprisingly delicious was, unexpectedly, the gold kiwi. The pineapple was great too!

I never would have imagined gold kiwi paired with red bean, but the combination of sweet red bean and tangy gold kiwi was excellent. This one was also huge, so I was full after finishing just one.
Wrap-up
If you're looking for dessert on Hwangnidang-gil, I definitely recommend picking up Tareudang's fruit mochi at least once. The fruit is generous enough to fit a whole piece inside, and the rice cake skin is thin enough that even my parents could enjoy it without feeling weighed down. If you've traveled all the way from Seoul to Gyeongju, be sure to grab some Tareudang fruit mochi while strolling around Hwangnidang-gil! It's already popular now, so as it gets even more famous, getting your preferred flavor might get harder — if you're planning a Gyeongju trip, I'd recommend stopping by sooner rather than later.
