Shrimp head butter grill at Seonbu Station izakaya Susanjang, Ansan
In short
Susanjang Seonbu is a seafood izakaya right in front of exit 1 of Seonbu Station in Ansan, Gyeonggi, where the menu changes with each season's catch. Two of us ordered salt-grilled seasonal shrimp, shrimp head butter grill, flounder sashimi and salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll), and a whole grilled flatfish arrived as the house starter. Plump, sweet shrimp and quiet, well-spaced tables made Susanjang Seonbu an easy substitute for driving out to Oido for grilled shrimp.

I love shrimp so much that, as a human being, of course I have to eat shrimp this season, right?🦐 There's a spot in Seonbu-dong good for seasonal seafood called Susanjang, so I went!

Where is Susanjang Seonbu and how do you get there?
Susanjang Seonbu is 242m from exit 1 of Seonbu Station, near Dongmyeong Shopping Center. It's really close to Ansan's Seonbu Station and near the shopping center, so the accessibility was great!!! However, there's no parking, so public transit is the way to go.

At the entrance there was a recommended menu posted for the current season's dishes

Inside Susanjang Seonbu: seating and the live fish tank
This is the interior seating at Susanjang Seonbu. There's group seating too, and the tables aren't packed too close together, so it doesn't feel super loud. A really important point for us noise-sensitive people haha

True to a seafood izakaya, there's a fish tank inside!! I liked that the tank is indoors rather than outside — it seems like it'd be kept more hygienically that way!!🐠🍤 They said this place changes its menu by season, mostly focusing on whatever seafood is in season~
They caught the seasonal shrimp for us right here too!!

This is the basic table setting, and there's a tablet so you can just order from that

The whole grilled flatfish that comes as a free starter
At Susanjang Seonbu, once you're seated, you get a whole grilled flounder as a complimentary side dish. I don't think I've seen any izakaya besides Susanjang serve a grilled fish as a default side. It was browned nicely and salty in a good way, really tasty😋

Salt-grilled seasonal shrimp: how sweet is it?

Looking at the visuals, I could really tell it's shrimp season. Gulp.. so plump

If you save up the cut-off heads, you can also get them grilled with butter~ It's basically a must, isn't it?🥰

Genuinely sweet, definitely in season, so delicious. All the raw fish places in Seonbu-dong are loud and hectic, but here at Susanjang, an izakaya in Seonbu-dong, you can eat great shrimp in a nice atmosphere!!
The amount of shrimp was just right for two women eating together, though guys might find it a bit lacking?

Shrimp head butter grill, the reason to order shrimp here
The shrimp head butter grill was also nutty, salty, and genuinely crispy — really good!!

Flounder sashimi with salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll)
The flounder sashimi comes out together with gimbap (seaweed rice roll), and it looked prettier than I expected. The gimbap isn't the style packed with lots of filling — it's simple, made to pair well with the flounder! Put a piece of flounder on top of the gimbap, add a bit of wasabi and some baek-kimchi (white kimchi), and it's delicious that way. Perfect combo.
Who should book a table at Susanjang Seonbu?
I visited because I wanted salt-grilled shrimp after a while, but the flounder salt gimbap ended up being tastier than expected, and the two of us left completely full. It would've been a shame to have only had the shrimp~ Since the menu changes with the season, I'm curious what seafood will show up next season.❓
It seems like a good spot for seafood-loving couples to have a drink on a date, or for friends to come drink together. If you're in Ansan and craving plump, sweet grilled shrimp, you don't need to go all the way to Oido. Try the seasonal shrimp at Susanjang, a restaurant and bar in Seonbu-dong, Ansan 🦐 I'd love to go back next time when a different seasonal menu comes out :)
