I was craving proper Korean food one afternoon, so I went looking for a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) place around Wondang and ended up at Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Station Branch. It was one of those days when I wanted rice that actually felt like a meal, so I decided to go all in with one of the set menus.

The restaurant spans the 1st and 2nd floors, and once I stepped inside, it was bigger than I expected.

The tables were spaced generously enough that I didn't feel crowded by other diners while eating. The overall vibe was clean but warm, and with a variety of table shapes, it looked like a good spot for groups too. There were also baby chairs on hand, which seemed convenient for family visits.

Looking over the menu board, I saw the Tteuranchae Bapsang basic set as the foundation, with a good range of Korean dishes on offer — dried croaker set, soy-marinated crab set, charcoal-grilled set, cockle salad set, grilled mackerel set, and more. I ended up ordering the soy-marinated crab set. I usually love ganjang gejang anyway, so it seemed like the perfect pick for a day when I was craving Korean food.

What comes with the ₩30,000 ganjang gejang set

Once I ordered the soy-marinated crab set, the main dish arrived alongside a whole spread of side dishes. The basic table setting came with japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), stew, and a variety of other side dishes, plus stone-pot rice — there was so much to eat. The stone-pot rice was honestly my favorite part.

I scooped out the warm rice to eat with the ganjang gejang, and by the end of the meal I made sure to enjoy the sungnyung (scorched rice tea) from the rice left in the stone pot. Korean food is all about pairing warm rice with one side dish at a time, and having it come in a stone pot meant the rice stayed warm throughout the whole meal, which I loved.

Soy-marinated crab and eggplant fritters

Ganjang gejang really is best eaten with rice. I paired the salty, savory crab with warm rice, and as I worked through the other side dishes, my chopsticks kept reaching back for more rice.

And surprisingly, the dish that stuck with me most that day was the eggplant fritters.

Since I ordered the ganjang gejang set, the crab naturally caught my eye first, but the eggplant fritters kept my chopsticks busier than expected. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, they were great for alternating with the other side dishes.

Being able to nibble on a variety of side dishes alongside the main dish, rather than eating just one thing the whole time, kept the meal from feeling repetitive.

Sungnyung from the stone pot and self-serve side dish refills

Once I was mostly done eating, I made sure to enjoy sungnyung made from the rice left in the stone pot. After the ganjang gejang and side dishes, finishing off with warm sungnyung made the whole meal feel properly complete.

There was also a self-serve refill corner for side dishes, so I could grab more of whatever I wanted myself.

Rice could be refilled too, so it seemed like a great setup for anyone who likes to eat a generous amount of rice.

I went looking for Korean food that afternoon, and after searching for hanjeongsik around Wondang, the ganjang gejang set left me full and satisfied. The stone-pot rice was my favorite part in particular, and the eggplant fritters I ate with the crab stuck with me too. Being close to Wondang Station and having parking made it an accessible spot as well, so I'm leaving this as a record of the meal I had that day.
