If you're looking for a local favorite hangover-breakfast spot on a Sokcho trip, Ichiba Ramen is it.
Our Sokcho trip had begun. It had been pouring rain back home that morning and I was worried, but the weather in Sokcho turned out to be gorgeous — such a relief.
We wanted to eat something light before going swimming, so we started the day with a simple meal. It was a place even the hotel staff recommended as a local favorite.

Inside Ichiba Ramen: atmosphere and seating
Ichiba Ramen has a spacious, open layout with no sense of crowding, and the white-and-dark-gray color scheme gives it a clean, polished look.

The open kitchen lets you see straight through to the ramen bowls lined up neatly, giving it a strong sense of being a specialist shop. Being able to watch the cooking process felt hygienic and trustworthy. The open layout has plenty of 2- and 4-person tables, so it's comfortable for families, friends, or couples.

There are also bar seats for solo diners, so eating alone here should be perfectly comfortable too.

Framed ramen illustrations on the wall add to the Japanese restaurant atmosphere.

Every table comes set with water and cups, danmuji (pickled radish), shichimi, and pepper, all free to use as you like.

How ordering works: kiosk and self-service
At Ichiba Ramen, the local favorite near Jungang Market and a great pick for Sokcho trip eats, there's a kiosk off to one side. You order there, then bring the food to your table and return the dishes yourself.

We ordered the special tonkotsu ramen and the red snow crab roe cream ramen.

What the special tonkotsu ramen tastes like
The special tonkotsu ramen features a rich broth made from domestic pork bones simmered for over 30 hours, giving it a deep, savory, nutty flavor.

It came topped with a soft-boiled ajitama egg, bean sprouts, scallions, mushrooms, finely chopped pork, and raw garlic. The generous amount of meat made it a filling meal, and as a rich Japanese-style tonkotsu ramen, it was seriously good.

What the red snow crab roe cream ramen tastes like
The sweetness of the red snow crab meat and the savory richness of the mentaiko (pollock roe) melted into a rich cream sauce — a special cream ramen that let you enjoy the charms of both pasta and ramen at once.

The crab meat was moist and tender, the mentaiko popped with texture, and it all came together with the smooth, thick cream. The noodles were chewy and soaked up the cream, giving them a strong nutty richness. As someone who loves cream pasta, this hit the spot exactly.

My friend who came along really enjoyed it too. The space had the clean feel of a proper Japanese ramen restaurant, plus the relaxed ease of a café.
