In short

Thanon55 is a Thai restaurant in Seongdong, Seoul, serving Thai pho and curry. We tried Moo Tod Curry, Poo Pad Pong Curry, and tom yum goong pho alongside its Thai-inspired interior and self-service bar. Verdict: the sweet-savory curries and rich tom yum broth made for a memorable dinner.

It had been a while since I came to Seongsu for some great Thai food. It was a dinner everyone enjoyed. This is Thanon55.

A Thai local-style atmosphere in Seongsu

For anyone looking for great pho in Seongsu who also loves Thai food, this place is a perfect fit. Statues greeting you with “sawasdee khap” welcome you first.

As soon as I entered, I loved the interior, which felt as though I had arrived in Thailand. It is normally a restaurant with a line, so if you are worried about waiting, simply make a Naver Booking before you go.

The stylish interior, full of a Thai local feel, was impressive, as was the way it made use of the character of an older villa building.

The self-service bar, where you can freely refill salad and side dishes during your meal, was clean too. I also liked the atmospheric tableware.

Crispy fried pork in Moo Tod Curry

The first dish to arrive was Moo Tod Curry. Moo tod is Thai-style fried pork: crisp outside and still juicy inside, making it a lovely match with curry. It is an appealing dish that lets you enjoy the crowd-pleasing crisp-outside, tender-inside texture of the meat and the deep flavor distinctive to Thai curry at once.

It was also delicious dipped in the chili sauce that came with it. I could see why it belongs on the best-menu list. It was not overly seasoned—just the right amount of addictive flavor.

Poo Pad Pong Curry and soft-shell crab

The Poo Pad Pong Curry I had been looking forward to as the main dish had a wonderful combination of soft egg, sweet and nutty coconut milk, and crisp crab.

The sweet-savory curry was neither intense nor excessive, yet I kept reaching for it, and we polished off the generously sized serving of rice in no time.

Soft-shell crabs are harvested just after molting, before their shells harden, and are characterized by being fried and eaten whole, shell and all.

The crisply fried exterior was light and crunchy, while the soft, moist texture distinctive to crab meat filled my mouth and naturally brought a smile to my face. The curry tasted similar to the Moo Tod Curry.

The tom yum goong pho had a cooling, spicy quality and a rich, distinctive tang that came together beautifully, winning us over from the very first bite!

Its rich, deeply satisfying broth soaked into the soft rice noodles just right, so I think we got to enjoy truly Thai-style pho. What a joy it is to taste that local flavor without having to go to Thailand! Since this is a place where you can enjoy both the flavors and atmosphere of Thailand, I definitely recommend visiting when you want a change of pace with delicious Thai food!
