I'd been craving donkatsu (pork cutlet) for a while... someone told me about a place in Ingye-dong famous for chicken cutlet and I happened to stop by... and I met the best chicken cutlet of my life. Amazing.
Where is Gyewondang Ingye Branch, and where do you park?
Gyewondang Ingye Branch is at 9 Ingye-ro 138beon-gil, Unit 102, Paldal-gu, Suwon, and it's open 11:00–21:00. There's a parking lot in the building.. and there's also parking space in front of the shop so it's easy to use.
We arrived at 7pm on a weekday evening... Ingye-dong is famous for its restaurants but parking is always tight there, so thankfully there was parking space in front of the shop and we parked and went in. haha
The entrance and dining room at Gyewondang
At the entrance there's something like a company motto ^^ 'Crispiness is our family's promise, tidiness is our courtesy to guests.' Pretty serious stuff.
This is the interior decor.. clean and tidy.. hmm, it feels less like a cutlet place and more slightly like a Chinese restaurant, but it's very clean and smells nice too haha
What we ordered and what it cost
Every table has a table-order screen so you can order and pay all in one. My wife and I ordered chicken cutlet (fried rice) and the set meal (hot dog bun)... it came to ₩30,000 for two, and we added one soda and one coffee for ₩900 each, so ₩1,800 more.
The interior and props are a bit unique. And like the company motto, there are good sayings posted here and there...
This looks like the kind of chiming clock we had at home when I was a kid... I took a photo because it was neat. You can feel the tidiness everywhere.
The coffee comes like this, and the soda comes in a paper cup... you can refill cola, Fanta, cider, etc. yourself as much as you need.
What comes in the Gyewondang set meal: three cutlets on one plate
This is the set meal I ordered.. and the food, of course... comes out neatly. Gyewon chicken cutlet, fried chicken cutlet, and handmade pork loin cutlet — three pieces come out...
The plate isn't a dish but made to feel like a stone slab. Feels upscale.
Chicken cutlet with fried rice and seasoned danmuji (pickled radish)
My wife got the chicken cutlet with fried rice. The chicken cutlet is way bigger than it looks in photos. It comes with danmuji (pickled yellow radish), kimchi, and a clear soup. Unusual thing is the danmuji doesn't come plain, it seems to be seasoned, and it's so good haha
A hot dog bun instead of rice: how do you eat it?
I ordered a hot dog bun instead of rice, and it comes out like this with cabbage and sauce drizzled on top of the bread. You cut the meat to size, put it on, fold it and eat it... personally, the hot dog was way better than the fried rice. Amazing, so next time I'm ordering two hot dogs lol
They even kindly posted instructions on how to eat the hot dog right on the table-order screen, so follow that and enjoy.... I've been to a lot of famous cutlet places in Ingye-dong, but this is the first time I've seen a non-franchise cutlet place like Gyewondang.
The danmuji is seasoned and it's deliciously sweet lol. The plating comes on something like a stone slab, so cutting it feels nice too.
The fried rice is decently tasty too. It's the kind of well-fried rice you'd get at a Chinese restaurant, so it's good, but after trying the hot dog I personally wanted to eat one more hot dog.
How was the chicken cutlet at Gyewondang?
The meat comes out thick and the batter is insanely crispy. Especially the chicken cutlet feels like eating fried chicken right now, the texture of the meat really comes through.
This is how you fold and eat the hot dog — wow, it really goes well with the cabbage. Downside is it gets a bit messy on your hands so I used a lot of tissues, but the hot dog is genuinely delicious enough that I want to come back to Gyewondang for it lol
Final verdict on Gyewondang Ingye Branch
There are so many famous cutlet places in Ingye-dong, but Gyewondang's chicken cutlet is really unique. Taste, service, space, all of it... top-notch. A place I have to revisit for sure, and one I've saved on Naver Maps.
