I was looking for a good spot to drink in Jongno and ended up at Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch. The aged sashimi quality here is really good and the drinking menu is genuinely varied. Especially now that it's getting cooler in autumn, you really have to try the seasonal salt-grilled shrimp too.

Lunch sets at Suksseong Susan
In the evening it's a great place to come drink, but they also have a separate lunch set. With options like kaisendon (Japanese-style seafood rice bowl) and yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef mixed rice), it also looked like a decent lunch spot for Jongno office workers.

Curtained tables that suit group dinners in Jongno
One thing I really liked about Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch. Curtains hang around every table, making it more private than I expected. It's not the fully open sashimi restaurant vibe — you can talk without worrying about the next table.
It's good for a casual drink with friends and also fits company dinners or bigger group gatherings. If you're looking for a Jongak Station bar or a Jongno gathering spot, this kind of seating layout is a pretty big plus.

Side dishes first, then the first drink
Once you sit down, the basic banchan (side dishes) come out first, easy to pick at. There are pairings like green peas and tofu that go well with sashimi, and the banchan spread wasn't too much, which worked well alongside the main aged sashimi. Perfect to nibble on while waiting for the sashimi.

Aged sashimi small set for two, 69,000 won, topped with caviar
The small aged sashimi set at Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is ₩69,000 for two. The moment the plate arrived, the visuals were already great. Each type even had a little name tag, so it was easy to check what I was eating as I went. From bluefin tuna and salmon to various white fish and shrimp, there was a real variety on one plate.

And each piece of sashimi was sliced fairly thick. It had a nice sheen, that soft texture typical of aged sashimi, but each type had a different chew, so comparing them one by one was genuinely fun.

With so many types of sashimi, the whole plate never got boring. Going from mild fish to rich, nutty ones, the drinks naturally kept flowing.

And on one side, caviar came out too, making it feel more special than just a plain sashimi plate. The aged sashimi looked so good I kept taking photos.

A toast the moment the sashimi platter lands
As soon as the aged sashimi spread arrived, we started with a toast! With so much variety of sashimi, it was fun picking at this and that — going from something rich like bluefin tuna to a mild white fish, the flavors kept shifting, and the drinks went down surprisingly well. The sashimi quality was so good that I feel like I drank more that day just because of the food.

Bluefin tuna and white fish: how the sashimi tasted
What especially caught my eye was the bluefin tuna. Deep, vivid color, and it melted smoothly in the mouth with a rich, nutty flavor rising right up. One bite of that and you reach for the next piece immediately.
The white fish, on the other hand, had a mild, chewy texture, so alternating between it and the bluefin tuna made for a nice contrast. Being able to eat this many varieties off one plate meant I never got tired of it.
Overall, there was a good variety of sashimi and each piece was solid quality. If you're looking for a sashimi restaurant in Jongno and care about sashimi quality, Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch seems like a good pick.

Autumn seasonal salt-grilled shrimp, 29,000 won
And now, the dish you have to eat in autumn. Salt-grilled shrimp, ₩29,000. When it first arrived the shrimp were still flopping around, which made me even more excited for it.
They cover it and let it cook on the salt, and the shrimp gradually turn a deep orange. As soon as the weather starts to cool, this is exactly the kind of salt-grilled shrimp you crave.
When the lid came off, there was a pile of plump shrimp. Peel off the shell and eat it right away — the shrimp meat was springy, sweet, and clean-tasting, so I kept reaching for more.

Just pulling out the meat and eating it, the springy texture really came through. I think you really have to eat salt-grilled shrimp at least once in autumn.
Keep the shrimp heads for butter grilling ★Susu's tip★
And here's the tip you need to remember! Don't just throw away the leftover shrimp heads — pile them up on the side and they'll make you a butter grill with them!

Eating them again as a butter grill turns them into a completely different snack. The crispy shrimp heads with that buttery aroma added were nutty and salty — genuinely delicious. Personally, I feel like you haven't really finished the salt-grilled shrimp experience until you've had these butter-grilled heads too. This is a must, so remember it!

Fried shrimp, 17,000 won, a good side order
In the middle of the meal we also ordered fried shrimp for ₩17,000. It comes with fried vegetables alongside the shrimp, and the portion was pretty generous.
The batter was crispy and the shrimp inside was springy, so it was nice to pick at between bites of aged sashimi. Dipped in the sauce, it was another dish I kept reaching for.

Why Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch works for a group
Between the aged sashimi, salt-grilled shrimp, and fried shrimp, the empty bottles kept piling up one by one. All the dishes went well with drinks, so it was a great place to come with a group and order a bunch of things to share. On top of that, the curtains around each table made it easy to talk just among ourselves, and it worked well as a spot for a Jongak Station bar, a Jongno company dinner, or a group gathering.
