Euljiro snack bar takeout with handmade sundae: Hyeonseoni-ne
In short
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is a longtime snack bar (bunsikjip) in Jung-gu, Seoul, a three-minute walk from Euljiro 1-ga Station Exit 3 and right next to Mega Coffee. On a rainy day the writer ordered the Hyeonseoni Combo Set for 25,000 won in the mild spice level to take away and shared it at home with her mom: the handmade sundae (blood sausage) came loaded with organs, and the mixed fritters never turned soggy. The tteokbokki at Hyeonseoni-ne tasted like the nostalgic version sold outside elementary schools, mild enough for anyone who cannot handle heat.

Where is Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, and how do you get there from Euljiro 1-ga Station?
I went to Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, an old-school Euljiro tteokbokki spot said to be one of Seoul's three best. Come out of Euljiro 1-ga Station Exit 3 and walk about 3 minutes, and you'll see the Mega Coffee building. It's right next door to that Mega Coffee.

Menu at Hyeonseoni-ne: combo sets and the Hyeonseoni Beer Set
This old-school Euljiro tteokbokki spot has a wide menu — tteokbokki, mini gimbap (seaweed rice roll), handmade sundae (blood sausage), Busan-style fish cake, mixed fritters, cheese ramyeon, spicy ramyeon, tuna mayo rice balls, and more. There are set menus too. There's even a Hyeonseoni Beer Set that comes with beer, so you can have a light drink. I personally love drinking beer with tteokbokki as a side more than almost anything 👍 Isn't Korean snack food basically the ultimate drinking companion?

Stepped inside. Whoa, someone start pouring me a beer already lol.

Old-school Euljiro atmosphere on a rainy day
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch has that old-school (nopo) atmosphere in full force, giving off real old-fashioned street cart (pojangmacha) vibes.

It was pouring rain that day, and honestly that kind of old-school atmosphere really makes you crave a beer. If my mom hadn't been waiting at home craning her neck for sundae, I probably would've sat right down and knocked back a few cold day-drinks here 🍺🍻

Go chase your lost memories 😆 Pikachu Pork Cutlet ₩2,500, Fried Rice Cake ₩2,500, Fried Fish Cake ₩3,000 — pretty cheap admission fee for nostalgia.

Ordering the 25,000-won Hyeonseoni Combo Set to go, in mild spice
I packed the Hyeonseoni Combo Set to eat at home with my mom. It's ₩25,000. The tteokbokki's spice level is adjustable, so I picked mild to match my own level. I've decided to drop the pointless spice-tolerance bravado lol. I've fully accepted my limits now 😢😂 And honestly, life as a spice wimp is pretty happy this way.

Here's the Hyeonseoni Combo Set. It was packed carefully and nothing leaked, so I carried it home still nice and warm.

It's made up of sundae (with organs), tteokbokki, mini gimbap, mixed fritters, and fish cake.

The fish cake and tteokbokki were steaming hot. The mixed fritters stayed crisp instead of getting soggy, which I really appreciated.

What comes in the Hyeonseoni Combo Set, item by item
The handmade sundae. The container was overflowing with a generous portion, organs included.

The tteokbokki. Loaded with fish cake too — just looking at it screams nostalgic old-school tteokbokki.

The mixed fritters come in a good variety of types.

Here's the fish cake. They gave a generous amount of broth too, which as a broth addict I really loved 😝

The mini gimbap. It's called "mini" but the size and thickness are anything but mini haha. Hefty and appetizing.

How it tasted: mini gimbap, handmade sundae and mild tteokbokki
Let's start with the mini gimbap. It's clean and nutty without being overly strong-flavored. Because it's mild, it pairs really well with the tteokbokki too.
My mom's favorite — the sundae.

No gamey smell at all, just nutty and delicious sundae. My mom really enjoyed it. She especially liked that it wasn't too salty.
It tastes exactly like the tteokbokki I used to eat outside my elementary school as a kid.

The soft, chewy rice cakes and the mild, slightly sweet sauce are addictively good. It's the taste that brings back childhood memories! And even though it's the mild version, there's a faint spicy kick at the very end that hit just right for a spice wimp like me.

The fish cake is worth devouring too. The broth was generous, and it was the kind of refreshing broth that clears away hangovers you didn't even have 😝

I love the fried gimmari (seaweed-wrapped glass noodle rolls) 😍

The vegetable fritters were crispy and tasty, and the fried squid was great too.
Is Hyeonseoni-ne worth a takeout order in Euljiro?
I ate really well with the Hyeonseoni Combo Set takeout from Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, this old-school Euljiro tteokbokki spot. The tteokbokki, said to be one of Seoul's three best, was delicious. Between the sundae loaded with organs, the mini gimbap, the variety of mixed fritters, and the fish cake with its broth, I left completely full and satisfied.
