Cheonggyecheon snack bar with tender sundae combo set: Hyeonseoni-ne

In short

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is an old-school snack bar by Cheonggyecheon in Jung-gu, Seoul, a one-minute walk from Euljiro 1-ga Station Exit 3. The Hyeonseon Combo Set (25,000 won), ordered at medium spice, brings tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), assorted fried snacks, handmade sundae (Korean blood sausage), mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls) and fish cake all at once, and the sundae was so moist and tender that even someone who usually avoids it ate happily. The set is generous enough for two people to eat until stuffed.

📋 Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch Menu

  • À la carte — tteokbokki, handmade sundae, mini gimbap, ramyeon, fish cake, fried snacks, rice balls
  • Hyeonseon Beer Set (tteokbokki + fried snacks + sundae + gimbap + 2 draft beers)
  • Hyeonseon Combo Set (tteokbokki + fried snacks + sundae + gimbap + fish cake)
  • Hyeonseon Set (tteokbokki + fried snacks + sundae + gimbap)
  • Sunny Set (tteokbokki + fried snacks + sundae)
  • Baby Set (half tteokbokki + 3 fried snacks + half sundae + 2 gimbap)
  • Instant menu — Instant Tteokbokki, single portion (rice cake, fish cake, jjolmyeon noodles, vegetables, yaki-mandu dumplings, egg)

There are two kinds of tteokbokki — regular snack bar style and instant style — and you can either order single items à la carte, or go for a set menu that bundles tteokbokki, fried snacks, and sundae together. I loved how many set options there were!

Hyeonseon Combo Set at medium spice, 25,000 won

What I ordered was the Hyeonseon Combo Set! It's the classic, most popular snack bar combination — tteokbokki, fried snacks, sundae, gimbap, and fish cake — served in that old-school snack bar bowl (╹◡╹)

Tteokbokki at medium spice: how hot is it?

First up was the tteokbokki! You can choose your spice level, so I went with medium, and it had exactly that classic snack-bar-style spicy-savory kick — the kind of taste anyone would enjoy, haha.

The rice cakes were cooked just right, wonderfully chewy, and paired really well with the sauce. There was also a generous amount of fish cake in there, which was great.

Handmade sundae: moist and tender

Tteokbokki paired with sundae — you just can't skip that combo... I usually don't eat much sundae even though I like organ meats in general, but this place's sundae was so moist and tender that it was genuinely delicious >< A sundae spot worth finding again after a long time!

Dipping it generously into the tteokbokki sauce is a must too.

Assorted fried snacks in the combo set

The assorted fried snacks came with squid, gimmari (seaweed noodle rolls), vegetables, meat mandu, and sweet potato. They're a good size and generously portioned. The batter was crispy with a nice bite, and the fillings inside were packed full and satisfying. The squid and vegetable ones especially were amazing 💕

Mini gimbap (small seaweed rice rolls)

The mini gimbap comes as 4 pieces. There was a good variety of fillings inside, so they were great to snack on between bites of tteokbokki. Dipping the gimbap into the broth is essential too (^з^)-☆

Fish cake and broth

The fish cake wasn't seasoned too strongly overall, so it went well with everything else! The pieces were large with a nice chewy texture.

It was a generous enough portion for two people to eat until absolutely stuffed, haha. The old-school snack bar atmosphere really added to the whole experience 👍

Verdict: is Hyeonseoni-ne worth a stop near Cheonggyecheon?

This is the spot for good food near Cheonggyecheon! The old-school atmosphere was lovely, and the tteokbokki, fried snacks, sundae, fish cake, and gimbap were all delicious, haha. Next time I'm planning to try the instant tteokbokki too. I recommend Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch ♡
